The theme of "Children of Love" is the defining mark of God's children through active love and righteousness. Rooted deeply in 1 John 3:10-11, the song echoes, "This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister." Here, the apostle John lays a foundation of identity rooted in righteous action and sacrificial love.
John, the beloved disciple, authored the Epistle of 1 John toward the end of the first century. This was a time when the early Church faced challenges from false teachings such as Gnosticism, which claimed secret knowledge outside the teachings of Christ. John writes with a sense of urgency and clarity to remind the believers of the foundational truths of the Gospel—truths centered on the life, love, and light of Jesus Christ. He contrasts starkly the children of God with the children of the devil, emphasizing that spiritual lineage is demonstrated through one's actions and relationships, especially how we love one another.
In 1 John 3:11, the word for "love" is ἀγάπη (agapē), a Greek word denoting unconditional, self-sacrificing love resembling the love of God toward humanity. This type of love is not based on emotions or feelings but rather is a deliberate choice to seek the well-being of others.
The expression "passed from death to life" in 1 John 3:14 contains the Greek word μεταβαίνω (metabaino), which signifies a transfer or crossing over from one place to another. This deepens our understanding by showing that genuine love is evidence of a transformative spiritual journey—an alignment with the heart of God, moving from a state of spiritual death to vibrant life in Christ.
### Verse 1:
John delineates who belongs to God and who does not, based on righteousness and love. This echoes Jesus’ words in John 13:35, "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." The absence of love indicates an alignment with darkness.
### Chorus:
The statement, "We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love each other," portrays love as the hallmark of spiritual rebirth. This echoes Romans 5:5, "God's love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us."
### Verse 2:
This verse draws a severe comparison, "Anyone who hates a brother or sister is a murderer." John here parallels Jesus' teaching in Matthew 5:21-22, suggesting that hatred equates to murder in God’s perspective, revealing the depth of sin residing in hatred.
### Chorus:
Reiterating the transformation from death to life, the persistent theme highlights love as an ongoing proof of one's spiritual status. The repetition signifies its fundamental importance.
### Verse 4:
John summarizes the beginning message: "We should love one another," which aligns with the commandment Jesus described in John 15:12, "Love each other as I have loved you." Living in righteousness and love manifests our identity as God's children, reflecting His character.
First, we must examine our hearts: Self-reflection against the standard of God's love is paramount. Are there traces of bitterness, jealousy, or hatred? Repenting and seeking God's transformative power is essential.
Second, we must actively choose love: This includes praying for those who have wronged us, offering forgiveness, and showing kindness. Colossians 3:14 reminds us to "put on love," indicating that it is an action to be pursued daily.
Third, we must seek righteousness: Clinging to God's Word and the guidance of the Holy Spirit empowers us to live righteously. John 14:26 emphasizes that the Spirit will teach us and remind us of Christ's teachings.
Fourth, we must speak life and light into others: Encouragement and edification of fellow believers fortify the body of Christ. Proverbs 18:21 confirms the power of the tongue to bring life.
Proclamation: "I declare that I am a child of God. I have passed from death to life because I choose to love my brothers and sisters. The love of God is poured into my heart, and I walk in righteousness as a reflection of my heavenly Father."
Prayer: "Heavenly Father, I thank You for drawing me from the darkness into Your marvelous light. Empower me through the Holy Spirit to love as You have loved. Remove any hindrance in my heart that prevents me from expressing Your love. Teach me to reflect Your righteousness in every action and word. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen."
