At this time, shepherding was a familiar concept; shepherds knew their sheep intimately, just as each sheep recognized the distinct voice of its shepherd. This personal knowledge and devoted care are the foundation upon which Jesus establishes His claim—He is the Good Shepherd and His followers are His sheep. Amidst the religious leaders' opposition and misunderstanding, Jesus offers a comforting, reassuring promise to those who choose to follow His voice.

The Greek word for "listen" is "ἀκούω" (akouō), which means more than just hearing; it implies an attentive, understanding listening followed by obedience. This is a listening that leads to action. The word "know" translated from the Greek "γινώσκω" (ginōskō) denotes an intimate, experiential knowledge rather than a casual acquaintance. To be known by Jesus is to be in a relationship sustained and nurtured by His continual presence and guidance.

2. Second, we must seek an intimate relationship with Him. As sheep know their shepherd through constant interaction, we deepen our relationship with Christ through prayer and worship, making Him our constant refuge.
3. Third, acts of obedience must follow. True listening manifests in actions. As the Spirit convicts and directs, we are called to respond in faith and obedience, as highlighted in James 1:22, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says."
4. Fourth, rest in the assurance of His eternal promise. Any anxiety regarding temporal uncertainties is quelled by anchoring in His eternal promises. His unfailing grip on our lives invites us to cast all burdens upon Him, as 1 Peter 5:7 implores, "Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
