As we approach the theme of bridging gaps, we turn our attention to the central truth found in Ephesians 2:14-16: "For He himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in His flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in Himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which He put to death their hostility."
Let us look at what the Word of God reveals about breaking down barriers through Jesus Christ.
The apostle Paul penned his epistle to the Ephesians during his imprisonment in Rome. This letter was meant to unify the church under the lordship of Jesus Christ, composed of both Jewish and Gentile believers. There were deep divisions between these groups, each having separate laws, customs, and religious identity. However, Paul speaks of the spiritual reality achieved through the death and resurrection of Jesus: the dismantling of the "dividing wall of hostility."
At the time, the literal wall in the temple separated Gentiles from Jews. Paul uses this imagery to convey a deeper spiritual truth that this barrier of division has been removed in Christ. Jesus' sacrifice brought reconciliation, creating one new humanity by bringing peace and destroying enmity.
The critical word here is "peace," which in Greek is "eirēnē" (εἰρήνη). This word is significant as it conveys more than mere absence of conflict. Eirēnē signifies a harmonious relationship, completeness, and unity. It evokes the Hebrew concept of "shalom," meaning wholeness and flourishing in every area of life. Understanding eirēnē opens our eyes to the full extent of what Christ accomplished — reconciliation and a restored relationship not only with God but also with one another.
Another key word is "reconcile," from the Greek "apokatallassō" (ἀποκαταλλάσσω), which intensifies the meaning of restoration to favor. It indicates a complete change brought about by mutual consent. Through Christ's work, this reconciliation requires active participation—both divine and human.
The song lyrics depict a fortress made of "fear and pride." These are real spiritual strongholds that prevent reconciliation and keep individuals isolated. Fear is often rooted in deception and a misunderstanding of God's nature, while pride is the exaltation of self over others. Proverbs 16:18 warns: "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall."
However, we are reminded in 2 Corinthians 10:4 that "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds." It is through God's Word and Spirit that these bricks can fall.
The pre-chorus speaks of connecting "step by step" and "meeting halfway." This aligns with the biblical call to pursue peace and mutual edification. Romans 12:18 admonishes us, "If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men." The Word of God charges us to take initiative in making peace, trusting God to do what we cannot.
The imagery of turning "noise to something real" is about transforming discord into understanding—echoing James 3:18: "Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness." Our words, when led by the Spirit, have the power to build bridges rather than barriers.
First, we must recognize and repent of any fear and pride in our hearts. Confessing these before the Lord, we invite His healing and truth to replace these strongholds with His peace.
Second, we must actively pursue reconciliation. This involves initiating conversation, offering forgiveness, and seeking understanding. Remember, one small step of faith begins the journey.
Third, be diligent in prayer, asking the Holy Spirit to guide your words and actions. This aligns with 2 Corinthians 13:11 where we are encouraged to "be of one mind, live in peace."
Fourth, proclaim the truth of God's Word over your relationships and circumstances. Ephesians 6:17 instructs us to wield the "sword of the Spirit" which is the Word of God, declaring it with authority over any division or misunderstanding.
Let us confidently proclaim: "Through Jesus Christ, I am reconciled to God and in Him, I have the power to reconcile with others. Every wall of fear, pride, and hostility is broken down in Jesus' Name. As I take steps towards peace, God mends what is broken and creates unity."
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is our peace. We ask for Your Holy Spirit to empower us to bridge gaps and bring restoration where there has been division. Break down every stronghold of fear and pride within and around us. May Your peace rule in our hearts as we pursue reconciliation with You and one another. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
