Dear friends, the essence of love, as both a divine attribute and a calling for us as believers, is rooted deeply in the Word of God. Our focus today is captured in 1 John 4:11, which declares, "Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another." John, the beloved apostle, conveys a fundamental truth—that the love of God is not merely a sentimental notion but a transformative reality that mandates our response.
The epistle of 1 John was crafted by the Apostle John toward the end of the first century, primarily to the believers in Asia Minor, amidst rising heresies such as Gnosticism. John, in his pastoral wisdom, sought to reaffirm foundational truths about Jesus Christ and exhort believers to a lifestyle consistent with God’s nature. The theme of love is central; John, having walked closely with Jesus, imparts an intimate understanding of divine love. Here, God’s love for us becomes the pattern and power for our love towards one another.
The term "love" used here is the Greek word "ἀγάπη" (agape). This term denotes an unconditional, selfless love that seeks the highest good of others. Unlike "φιλία" (philia) which signifies friendship, or "ἔρως" (eros) which denotes romantic love, agape is rooted in action rather than emotion. Understanding agape gives depth to the lyrics: it speaks of a divine quality of love that originates from God and is meant to be expressed among believers as a testament to His indwelling presence.
The word "complete" in 1 John 4:12 is translated from the Greek "τελειόω" (teleioo), which means to bring to an end, to accomplish, perfect, or fulfill. This indicates that the expression of divine love through us is an active process that showcases its maturity and fulfillment.
Stanza by Stanza:
This exhortation draws from the profound sacrificial love of God demonstrated through Jesus Christ (John 3:16). John is emphatic: our obligation to love is grounded in God’s love toward us.
Here, John reaffirms the intrinsic attribute of God—He is love. To abide in love is to dwell in God, signifying an intimate fellowship. This phrase echoes John 15:4, where Jesus invites us to abide in Him. The mutual indwelling of God in us and us in Him is a theme deeply resonant in John’s writings (see also John 14:23).
While God's essence is invisible, His presence is made manifest through our love for one another. This gives credence to Matthew 18:20 where His presence is assured wherever believers converge in unity.
Throughout scripture, repetition underscores significance. John emphasizes repeatedly to ensure his audience fully comprehends the divine nature and our call to embody it (John 13:34-35).
The echo of Christ’s sacrifice compels active love. This aligns with the second greatest commandment: "Love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39), highlighting love as an indispensable mark of true discipleship.
First, we must receive God’s love. Understand that agape is not naturally inherent in us but is imparted through the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). Submitting to God daily, seek to be filled with His love.
Second, we must choose to act in love. Love is demonstrated through actions (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Assess your relationships, and actively seek opportunities to serve others sacrificially, letting God’s love flow through you.
Third, cultivate a lifestyle of abiding in His love. Meditate on John 15, allowing the Word to dwell richly in you. Daily prayers of thanksgiving and surrender maintain our connection to the Source of love.
Fourth, foster a community reflective of God’s love. Involve yourself in a fellowship that nurtures love, accountability, and spiritual growth (Hebrews 10:24-25).
Proclamation:
In the authority of the Word of God, I proclaim that God is love, and as He abides in me, I choose to walk in love. The love of God is shed abroad in my heart, making me a vessel of His divine nature. I commit to loving others as Christ has loved me, and I shall witness His love perfected in me.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the revelation of Your unfailing love. Empower me, O Lord, to abide in Your love and to express it towards those around me. May my life be a testimony of Your presence, and may Your love be perfected in me as I yield to Your Holy Spirit. Amen.
