The essence of "Living in Love" resonates deeply from the central theme of love as depicted in the Scriptures. The primary text from which this is drawn is 1 John 4:11-12, "Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another... No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us." Here we find the foundation laid for the believer's mandate to manifest divine love, not as a mere emotion, but a transformative power that reveals the presence of God within us.
The Apostle John, the disciple whom Jesus loved, penned the epistle of 1 John. Writing to the early church, John addressed false teachings and encouraged believers to live authentically Christ-like lives. During a time when the church faced theological challenges such as Gnosticism, which downplayed the humanity of Christ and undervalued physical acts of love, John's reiteration of love as evidence of God's indwelling was both timely and corrective. He emphasized love not just as doctrine but as the very essence of God’s nature and our connection with Him.
In the Greek, the word used for "love" is "ἀγάπη" (agape), which signifies a deep and selfless love. This is love of choice, one that transcends emotions and is rooted in the nature of God. Unlike "eros" (romantic love) or "philia" (brotherly love), "agape" is unconditional and sacrificial. Understanding "agape" leads us into the realization that our call to love one another transcends human ability or motive; it is divine love expressed through us.
The term "complete" in the Greek is "τελειόω" (teleioó), meaning to bring to an end, to finish, or to perfect. When John states that God's love is made complete in us, it suggests that love reaches its intended purpose and fullness when it is expressed among believers, maturing and fulfilling its divine purpose.
The lyrics reflect the theological truth of Trinitarian love—a hallmark of John's writing.
### "God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God lives in them."
This profound declaration invites us into a mystery where to dwell in love is to dwell in God. This aligns with John 15:5, where Jesus encourages believers to abide in Him. To live in love is a continuous action of abiding, not a one-time occurrence. It implies a lifestyle grounded in the presence of God.
### "No one has ever seen God..."
Reminds us of John 1:18, "No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son, who is Himself God..." Jesus is the revelation of God. Thus, when we engage in divine love, the invisible God becomes visible through our actions. In John 13:34-35, Jesus gives a new command: to love one another as He has loved us, thereby proving to the world that we are His disciples.
### "Since He loved us this much— we must love, we must love one another."
This reflects Romans 5:8, which states while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. It's an exhortation to mimic divine love—actively choosing to love others with the same intentionality and sacrifice that Christ displayed. John reiterates this necessity for love in 1 John 4:19, "We love because He first loved us." Since His love is both example and empowerment, our response must be love.
First, we must choose to abide in God's love daily. Abiding requires constant communion with God through prayer, worship, and Scripture meditation (John 15:4). It is in this place of abiding that we are filled with His Spirit and enabled to love from a pure heart.
Second, we must actively demonstrate love in our community. According to Galatians 5:13-14, we are to serve one another humbly in love. Such service proves our faith as genuine (James 2:17). Manifesting care, offering forgiveness, and extending help, all reflect God's agape love.
Third, we must let love guide our actions. Notice that 1 Corinthians 13 reveals that love is patient and kind, void of envy and pride. By letting love lead, we align our lives with the character and will of God.
Fourth, we must allow love to complete its work in us. This requires vulnerability and willingness to be a vessel through which God's love reaches others, allowing divine love to mature and perfect us.
Proclamation: "I am a vessel of God's love. Because God is in me, I choose to live in His love and express His love daily. As I abide in love, I abide in God and He abides in me. God's love in me is being perfected, and through this love, His presence is made known to the world."
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your unparalleled love that was expressed through Jesus Christ. I declare that Your love abides in me, and through Your Spirit, I am empowered to love others. Let my life be a testament of Your love and presence, so that Your name is glorified. Lead me to love with sincerity and truth, accomplishing Your perfect work in me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
