The central theme of the song "Living in Love" is an invitation and exhortation for believers to manifest divine love, as outlined in the scriptures from the Epistle of John. As it is written in 1 John 4:7-12: "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." Let us examine the profound instruction and revelation that Scripture provides.
The Apostle John, an eyewitness of Jesus Christ, penned these words toward the latter part of the first century A.D. during a time when the early church faced various heresies and internal divisions. John, known as the disciple whom Jesus loved, was addressing believers who were witnessing a dilution of the apostolic teaching with false doctrines. His epistle is a call to return to foundational truths. John writes with the authority of an elder and spiritual father, reminding the followers of the essential nature of God as love. The passage admonishes believers to love one another as evidence and expression of their relationship with God.
In the passage, we encounter the word "love" multiple times. In the original Greek text, the word used is ἀγάπη (agape). This is not a love based on emotions or reciprocation; rather, it signifies an unconditional, self-sacrificing love that reflects God's character. It is the highest form of love, one that seeks the best for others, regardless of their response or worthiness. Understanding agape as the divine love transforms our interpretation of the command to love one another—it becomes an extension of our divine nature.
Additionally, the term "knows" in Greek is γινώσκω (ginōskō), which implies a deep, intimate knowledge that transcends mere intellectual assent. It is an experiential knowledge. Thus, to know God is not merely to recognize Him but to engage in an ongoing pursuit of His presence and reality demonstrated through love.
The lyrics encapsulate a profound theological truth: God is love. This is not merely an attribute of God but His very essence. Every action of God springs from His nature—love. This theme resonates throughout Scripture and finds its pinnacle in the incarnation, as John elaborates, "This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him" (1 John 4:9).
Living in love, then, becomes synonymous with living in God. The reciprocal indwelling—our living in God and God in us—is a mystery and privilege bestowed upon believers. This is reminiscent of Jesus' prayer in John 17:21, where He desires that we may be one with Him as He is one with the Father.
Furthermore, when John states, "No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us," he is acknowledging the invisible nature of God, made visible through our actions. In loving each other with agape love, we demonstrate the unseen God to the world. This echoes Exodus 33:20 where Moses cannot see God's face and live, yet the nature of God is made manifest through His love in us.
1. Acknowledge and Receive God’s Love: The first step to living in love is receiving agape from God through Christ. Meditate on Scriptures that speak of God's love, such as Romans 5:8, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."
2. Cultivate Intimacy with God: Foster a deeper relationship with God through prayer, worship, and study of His Word. As we know Him, we are transformed into His image, and love becomes our natural response.
3. Practice Selfless Love: Seek opportunities to love others selflessly, putting their needs before your own. This could involve serving in your church, helping those in need, or simply being present for someone who requires a listening ear.
4. Remain in His Love: Stay connected to the vine, as John 15:4-5 teaches, for without Him, we can do nothing. Let God’s love infuse your daily actions, thoughts, and attitudes.
Let us make this proclamation based on the scripture in 1 John 4:16: "I declare that God is love. As I live in love, I live in God and God in me. By His love, I am made complete and reveal His presence to the world."
Pray with me:
"Father, we thank You that You are the very essence of love. We receive Your love through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and ask that You fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that we might love others with Your divine love. Enable us to manifest Your presence to a world in need. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen."
This teaching equips us with not only the understanding but the application of living in love, as God has intended for His children. Let us continue to grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, walking as He walked, in the power of His love.
