The central theme of the song "Living in Love" is a call to embody love, which is the very essence of God. Foundational to this is the Scripture from 1 John 4:7-12, which declares, "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." This passage captures the heart of the Christian walk—living in love as a manifestation of being born of God. As we approach this study, let us look at what the Word of God says about love, God’s nature, and how this transforms our lives.
The Apostle John, often referred to as the Apostle of Love, writes this letter to believers in the late first century. The primary motive of this epistle is to affirm the true nature of God, which is love, and to warn against false doctrines seeping into the early church. The church was facing threats from heretical teachings and divisions that sought to distort the message of Christ. John’s focus was on reinforcing the understanding of who God is and what it means to live in accordance with His nature. Hence, he addresses the readers as "dear friends," emphasizing the communal and relational aspect of Christian love, transcending mere doctrinal correctness.
1. Love (Agape): The Greek word used here is "agapē," which signifies an unconditional, self-sacrificing love. It is the highest form of love, differentiated from "philia" (friendship) and "eros" (romantic love). Agapē is divinely bestowed and reflects God’s character. Understanding this, we recognize that our own expression of love is to mirror the selfless nature of God's love towards us.
2. Complete/Perfect (Teleioo): In the phrase "his love is made complete in us," the Greek word "teleioo" indicates a process towards maturity or perfection. It involves being fully accomplished or thoroughly equipped. God's love reaches its intended culmination in us when we reflect His nature—through loving others. This deepens our understanding that love is not static but an active, developing reality in our lives.
### Verse 7-8: The Source of Love
"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God." Here, we see that the capacity to love is not merely human but divine, sourced directly from God Himself. Love is a hallmark of regeneration—the new birth. Just as John states, "because God is love," our ability and commandment to love are intricately connected to our knowing God.
### Verse 9-10: The Manifestation of God’s Love
"This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him." The sacrificial sending of Jesus encapsulates the purest form of love: the giving of oneself for the redemption of others. John reinforces the truth that love is demonstrated by God's action. Cross-referencing John 3:16, the theme of divine love intertwining with action and sacrifice is evident. God's love is not abstract but has been made manifest through the historical entry of Jesus Christ into the world.
### Verse 11-12: The Completion of Love
"No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us." Here, John addresses both a spiritual reality and a practical outworking. Though God is invisible, His presence becomes tangible through the love we express towards one another. The process of our love being made "complete" or "perfect" in us signifies a journey towards embodying the fullness of God's love, as we abide in Him.
First, we must acknowledge our source of love. Realizing that our ability to truly love others comes from God resets our perspective. As we yield to the Holy Spirit, He fills us with this divine love. Let us proclaim: "I am able to love because God's love is in me."
Second, we must follow Christ’s example. Jesus' life was the ultimate demonstration of love. By daily taking up our cross and choosing to serve others, we reflect God's love. We mirror Christ’s sacrifice, knowing "greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13).
Third, we must commit to community and fellowship. Love thrives in relational contexts. Being actively involved in the body of Christ allows us to practice and perfect love with one another. Let us be intentional in our interactions, forgiving offenses, and seeking unity.
Fourth, we must allow God’s love to perfect us. Acknowledge the ongoing work of God’s love in us, bringing us to maturity. Proclaim: "God's love is at work in me, making me perfect and complete."
Proclamation: "In the name of Jesus, I declare that I am born of God and know God. God's love flows through me, for He is love. As I abide in His love, His love is made complete in me, and I reflect His glory through loving others."
Prayer: Heavenly Father, we thank You for the profound revelation of Your love. Through Jesus Christ, You have shown us the way of love. Grace us, Lord, to live out this love daily, in word and deed. Empower us by Your Spirit to embody Your nature and to bring glory to Your name. May we be instruments through which Your love is manifested to a world in need. Amen.
