Fearless love! What an extraordinary concept penned in the lyrics of this stirring song. It is rooted deeply in the powerful truth found in 1 John 4:17-19: "This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us." Let us look at what the Word of God says.
In the epistle of 1 John, the apostle John writes to the early church, addressing significant themes such as love, obedience, and truth. This letter reflects the heart of a spiritual father, urging believers to live out the implications of the Gospel. At this time, believers faced threats against their faith both externally, from persecution, and internally, through false teaching. John establishes a contrast between those who love God and demonstrate it through obedience versus those who merely profess faith. It is amid these exhortations that John provides the reassuring promise of God's perfect love, which dispels all fear.
Let us examine two key terms in the scripture.
Understanding these terms underscores the power and completeness of God’s love as a forceful expeller of fear, an action rather than a passive sentiment.
The first stanza of the song echoes the assurance of love made complete among us. The lyrics remind us, "In this world we are like Jesus." This reflects the doctrine that, as believers, we are called to emulate Christ’s walk on Earth. Just as Christ was the embodiment of God’s love, so are we to be vessels of His perfect love, thereby driving out fear.
"There is no fear in love" is repeated throughout, suggesting emphasis on the relationship between love and fear. In the Kingdom of God, love is not passive; it is a dynamic force that actively dispels the paralyzing power of fear, specifically the fear linked to judgment and punishment. John underscores that fear is intrinsically tied to the concept of divine retribution, a fear abolished through the assurance of God’s love.
The lyrical repetition, "The one who fears is not made perfect in love," serves as a spiritual diagnosis. Fear indicates areas in our lives where God’s love has not been fully welcomed or understood. Hence, we must align ourselves with the truth that we "love because He first loved us." Our love is a response to God’s initiating love, which grounds us with unshakeable security.
First, we must abide in God’s Word. To experience and know this perfect love, immerse yourself in Scripture. As Jesus stated, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you” (John 15:7). Meditate on passages that affirm God’s love and promises.
Second, we must confess and confront our fears. Name the fears you hold and bring them before the Lord in prayer, allowing His perfect love to drive them out. Consider 2 Timothy 1:7, which reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
Third, we must act in love towards others. As God’s love is perfected in us, it compels outward action. Demonstrate love by serving others, forgiving as you are forgiven, and extending grace.
Fourth, we must cultivate a spirit of gratitude and worship. Recognize and give thanks for God’s relentless love. Worship changes the atmosphere and realigns our focus from fear to love.
Proclamation: "In Christ, I am filled with perfect love that casts out all fear. I walk as Jesus did, free from the bondage of fear. I am rooted and grounded in God’s love, confident and fearless in the day of judgment."
Prayer: Almighty God, I thank You for Your perfect love, which overcomes fear and fills me with divine confidence. Holy Spirit, reveal areas of my heart unsurrendered to Your love and lead me into full maturity. Empower me to love as You have loved me, reflecting Jesus in this world. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
