The central theme that resounds through this song is the Divine mandate given to the followers of Christ: to preach, heal, and demonstrate the presence of the Kingdom of Heaven here on earth. As we turn to the Word of God, we see in Matthew 10:8 Jesus speaking to His disciples: “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.” These words speak with fervent authority, charging us to manifest God's Kingdom in tangible ways. The subsequent verses further encapsulate this proclamation with a clear kingdom directive: "The kingdom of heaven has come near" (Matthew 10:7).
This scripture originates from Jesus' instruction to the twelve disciples as He sends them out on a mission. The context reveals a distinct slice of time where Jesus, having ministered heavily in Galilee, ready to disperse His closest followers to extend this ministry. These instructions are part of Jesus’ mission discourse which occurs during His earthly ministry. He empowered His disciples with authority to continue His works. At this moment, they stand on the cusp of something greater—ushering in the Kingdom by demonstrating its power and heralding its imminence. The mission is not ornate with material necessities but focused on the spiritual urgency and authority endowed by Christ Himself.
Two pivotal Greek words from these scriptures demand our attention: "Basileia" (kingdom) and "Dorean" (freely).
These words underscore the dynamic presence and gratuitous nature of the Kingdom’s power being revealed and shared.
### Heal the Sick, Raise the Dead
The imperative to "heal the sick" and "raise the dead" signifies the tangible manifestations of the Kingdom. In Luke 10:9, Jesus further states, "Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’" Healing and miracles serve as divine testimonies proclaiming the presence of God's rule and reversing the curse of sin and death.
### The Kingdom of Heaven Has Come Near
“The kingdom of heaven has come near” is not just a statement; it's a reality breaking into human history. It is a call to recognize God's direct interference in the affairs of men through Jesus. This phrase echoes John the Baptist's message in Matthew 3:2, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." Repentance becomes the necessary response to this divine invasion, symbolizing a turning from sin to receive the kingdom.
### Freely You Have Received—Freely Give
In Isaiah 55:1, we find this notion echoed: "Come, all you who are thirsty... come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost.” The disciples' mission was to convey the unbounded generosity of God’s grace. Jesus admonishes against charging for miracles or the gospel, emphasizing the purity of sharing God’s gifts with others.
### Do Not Take Gold
By instructing the disciples to take no gold or silver, Jesus is drawing them away from reliance on material provision, illustrating faith in God's provision. Matthew 6:33 reminds us, "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” The true wealth lies in spiritual fruit and eternal inheritance.
First, we must: Recognize the Presence of the Kingdom. In every area of life, we must be attuned to how the Kingdom can be manifested—whether in our homes, workplaces, or communities.
Second, we must: Embrace the Authority of Christ. Relinquish reliance on material strength or human wisdom and lean into the authority granted by Jesus to minister His kingdom with power.
Third, we must: Freely Share God’s Gifts. Our mission is to extend grace as we have received it—freely. Whether through acts of service, words of encouragement, or sharing the gospel, it's crucial we act as channels of God’s blessing.
Fourth, we must: Live in Expectation and Readiness. Remembering that we are workers worthy of our keep, we must embody the principles and priorities of the kingdom, trusting God to supply our needs.
Proclamation: I declare that the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. I will heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, and cast out demons by the authority of Jesus. Freely I have received, and freely I choose to give. The Kingdom is not only near; it is here, and I will walk in the fullness of its power and grace.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I come before You in Jesus’ name. I ask for a deeper awareness and manifestation of Your Kingdom in my life. May I be a vessel of Your healing power and a herald of Your truth. Empower me to live by faith, not by sight, trusting in Your divine provision. May the Holy Spirit guide me to freely offer what I have freely received, bringing glory to Your name forevermore. Amen.
