In the pursuit of spiritual growth and effectiveness within the body of Christ, the integration of love and the gifts bestowed by the Holy Spirit remains critical. As the Apostle Paul articulates in 1 Corinthians 14:1, "Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy." This exhortation forms the basis of our teaching, emphasizing the supreme importance of love in exercising spiritual gifts, particularly that of prophecy.
Let us look at what the Word of God says, entrusting ourselves to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we examine this profound truth.
The letters to the Corinthians are Paul's instruction to a young church dealing with numerous internal challenges. In 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses issues ranging from moral failures to abuses of church practices. Specifically, chapter 14 is part of a larger discussion beginning in chapter 12 about spiritual gifts and their proper use within the church community. As a follower of Jesus Christ, Paul is concerned with the manner and heart orientation with which believers exercise their spiritual gifts.
The Corinthians had an enthusiastic but immature approach to the use of their gifts, leading to disorder and self-centered expressions. Paul clarifies their purpose: that gifts are for the edification of the church rather than personal aggrandizement. By anchoring these gifts in love, as outlined in 1 Corinthians 13, their exercise would naturally lead to unity and edification.
Let us delve deeper into key words used in this scripture. The Greek word translated as "pursue" is "diōkō." In its literal sense, it implies to follow or earnestly chase after, indicating an intentional and vigorous pursuit. In the context of love, it means making it a priority and allowing it to guide all actions.
The word "prophesy" is translated from the Greek "prophēteuō," which means to speak forth, publish, or make known hidden things through divine inspiration. The emphasis here is on delivering messages that illuminate God's will, offering guidance, comfort, and strengthening the Body of Christ.
Understanding these words helps us grasp the earnestness with which Paul urges us to pursue love and desire prophecy.
God’s desire is for His Church to be edified and strengthened, and this is most effectively achieved through the act of prophecy. Prophecy, which encompasses speaking divine truths with clarity and boldness, brings understanding and encouragement. Consider the following key themes from the lyrics:
Stanza One: Here, we find the dual exhortation to pursue love and the gifts of the Spirit, with a particular emphasis on prophecy. This underscores the need for believers to be balanced in their approach—led by love as the motivation.
Stanza Two & Three: Speaking in tongues serves as a personal edification tool—a direct conversation with God. However, prophecy edifies the church by bringing clarity and encouragement. Paul underscores this purpose—that the edification of the Body must take precedence.
The repetition of these truths reinforces their significance, urging believers to understand the greater benefit of prophecy over tongues in a corporate setting.
Consider Ephesians 4:29, where we are encouraged to speak only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs. Prophecy serves this purpose precisely, as it strengthens the entire community.
Stanza Four: Finally, the repetition in Stanza Four emphasizes the necessity of focusing our gifts on strengthening, encouraging, and comforting others, rather than pursuing self-edification.
First, we must pursue love with intentionality. Love is the foundation upon which all else is built, and without it, the exercise of spiritual gifts becomes mere noise (1 Corinthians 13:1).
Second, we must seek to cultivate the gift of prophecy. Expressly ask the Holy Spirit to develop this gift within you for the purpose of strengthening the church. Engage in regular scriptural study, as it sharpens our spiritual senses and aligns us with God’s heart.
Third, create a culture of honoring the gifts in others. Encourage and facilitate environments where the variety of gifts, including tongues and interpretation, flourish in balance, always prioritizing the edification of the body.
Fourth, act upon the words of prophecy. As God speaks through His servants, take those words seriously. Weigh them carefully against Scripture, and where applicable, implement them in cooperation with core church leadership.
Proclamation: "I choose to pursue love, the greatest gift of all. I earnestly desire prophecy so that my words may strengthen, encourage, and comfort others. With the help of the Holy Spirit, I commit to edifying the Body of Christ through His divine gifts."
Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
We thank You for Your gifts generously bestowed upon us through the Holy Spirit. Help us to pursue love above all else, and stir within us a desire for prophecy that builds up Your church. Let our gifts be not for personal glory, but solely for Your honor and the benefit of our fellow believers. Guide us, Lord, in the faithful use of these gifts to manifest Your will on the earth.
In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
Believers, let us move forward in faith, yielded to the direction of His Spirit, intent on manifesting His love and power in our lives amidst His Church.
