The passage of scripture we consider is found in 1 Corinthians 14:1-4, which reads:
*"Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church."* (1 Corinthians 14:1-4, NKJV)
In this passage, Apostle Paul lays down a crucial instruction for all believers, emphasizing love as the foundation and urging the pursuit of spiritual gifts—highlighting prophecy as particularly significant. This is an invitation to embrace a deeper spiritual dynamic in our communal and personal walk with the Lord.
Paul's first letter to the Corinthians addresses a church fraught with challenges—division, immorality, and confusion about spiritual gifts. Paul was responding to reports and questions from the Corinthian church. Specifically, chapters 12 to 14 deal with spiritual gifts. Chapter 12 introduces the gifts, Chapter 13 underscores the primacy of love as the motive, and Chapter 14 offers practical guidelines for the exercise of these gifts within the church.
In Corinth, there was a particular confusion regarding the use of tongues and prophecy. Some had exalted speaking in tongues to an unscriptural level, leading to disorder in worship. Paul carefully corrects this, focusing on edification, which is the building up of the church.
Let us examine two critical terms from this passage: "love" and "prophesy."
Understanding these words helps us grasp the Apostle’s instruction: Love motivates and undergirds our pursuit of prophecy, ensuring it serves others and not merely ourselves.
### Stanza by Stanza Analysis
1. "Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially the gift of prophecy."
Paul instructs that love must be the path or way upon which the exercise of gifts rides. Spiritual gifts without love are, as 1 Corinthians 13 illustrates, like a "sounding brass" or "clanging cymbal." Prophecy, placed as a priority among the gifts, is uniquely powerful for community edification.
2. "The one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to people but to God."
Tongues are a sign for personal edification, not public address (1 Corinthians 14:22). Though valuable, it lacks communal benefit unless interpreted. Paul does not diminish the gift but places it in proper relationship to that which serves the church corporately.
3. "But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging, and comfort."
Here we see prophecy is not limited to foretelling future events but extends to exhortation (encouraging adherence to spiritual truths) and comfort (soothing and assurance). These three elements—strengthening, encouraging, comfort—are imperative for a thriving church body.
4. "Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves, but the one who prophesies edifies the church."
Edification is the central theme. Spiritual gifts serve to build up, not merely demonstrate spiritual prowess. Prophecy, by directly addressing and benefiting the community, has a corporate focus that Paul prioritizes.
5. "Pursue love, desire the gifts—above all, prophesy."
The cycle comes full circle back to love and prophecy. Without love, gifts falter. Paul emphasizes a proactive stance—pursuit and desire should be directed towards using gifts to uplift the body, with prophecy being paramount due to its direct link to communal edification.
### Spiritual Realities: The Nature of Prophecy
Prophecy is an articulation of God's heart and mind to His people. As believers, we must realize that prophecy is not solely about future prediction but discloses God’s truth and direction for present circumstances (Revelations 19:10). This underlies a key principle in spiritual warfare—the piercing truth demolishes strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).
### Steps for Believers:
1. Prioritize Love.
Every pursuit of spiritual gifts must be anchored in love. Seek to love others as Christ loves us, using our gifts to serve and uplift them.
2. Earnestly Desire Spiritual Gifts.
Consider 1 Timothy 4:14—do not neglect the gift. Stir a desire for spiritual giftings, opening oneself up to the diverse ways God empowers His church.
3. Seek Opportunities to Prophesy.
Begin by aligning yourself with the Word of God. The Bible is the ultimate prophetic revelation. Practice listening to the Holy Spirit in prayer and speaking God’s truth over situations.
4. Cultivate Edification.
Focus on using your gifts to strengthen, encourage, and comfort others. Be spiritually attentive to the needs within your community and seek the Lord's guidance on how best to address them.
### Proclamation
We declare: "We pursue the way of love and earnestly desire spiritual gifts, especially that we may prophesy, so that we may edify, encourage, and comfort the body of Christ."
### Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your gifts and Your love that surpasses understanding. We ask for the eager desire to prophesy, to speak Your words for the strengthening, encouragement, and comfort of Your people. Open our hearts to love others deeply and empower us with Your Spirit to use our gifts for the edification of Your church. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
