The central theme of our exploration is the guaranteed path to true success as outlined in Joshua 1:8-9. The Word of God commands us: "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful" (Joshua 1:8, NIV). This foundational scripture underscores a profound truth—success in the eyes of God requires a disciplined adherence to His Word.
To fully grasp the import of this command, we must place ourselves in the shoes of Joshua, the successor of Moses. The Israelites were on the cusp of entering the Promised Land—a land they had awaited for centuries. Moses, their leader, had passed away, and the mantle of leadership had fallen on Joshua. It was a critical and daunting moment. The responsibility of guiding a nation into God's promise was a formidable task, compounded by the presence of entrenched enemies in the land. In this context, God reaffirms His covenant with Joshua by ensuring divine presence and guidance, conditional upon Joshua’s commitment to God’s Word.
### Hebrew Word: *הֲגָּה* (Hagah)
The term "meditate" in the original Hebrew is *hagah*, which conveys a sense far deeper than quiet reflection. It means to murmur, mutter, or speak softly to oneself. The Jewish tradition of meditation involves an active engagement with God's Word, almost like a recitation, a consistent verbal reminder of divine truth.
### Hebrew Word: *יָרַש* (Yarah)
The word often translated as "successful" in this context is *yarash*, generally meaning to inherit or occupy. Hence, success in God’s eyes is aligning with His intentions and inheriting His promises, rather than simply achieving worldly milestones.
By understanding these terms, we realize the emphasis is on an active, spoken engagement with God’s Word leading to possession of His promises.
The lyrics of this song reflect a blueprint for divine success, rooted deeply in scripture. The call to "Keep this Book of Instruction always on your lips" connects directly with the biblical call to *hagah*. It signifies the necessity of vocalizing, internalizing, and allowing the Word to guide daily actions and decisions.
### A Continuous Meditation
"Meditate on it day and night" mirrors the psalmist's attitude in Psalm 1:2, where the righteous delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it consistently. This continuous meditation ensures that our minds are captivating God's truth rather than worldly distractions.
### The Divine Presence Assured
The exhortation, "for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go," echoes the promise of God’s omnipresence, much like Jesus assured, "And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20, ESV). Such promises dispel fear and cultivate boldness and courage.
### Command for Courage
"Be strong and courageous," is a charge that reflects spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:10-18 describes the need for believers to put on the whole armor of God. Strength and courage stem from our assurance of God’s presence and power with us.
### A Path to True Prosperity
The refrain of “Then you will be prosperous and successful” emphasizes that genuine success is intrinsically linked to our relationship with God through His Word. This aligns with 3 John 1:2, which desires prosperity in all things, as our soul prospers in truth.
1. Speak the Word Continually: Develop a habit of declaring God’s Word aloud in your daily life (*hagah*). This verbalization brings the truth of Scripture into your present circumstances, building faith and renews the mind.
2. Meditate Consistently: Schedule time both day and night to reflect on scripture. Allow the truths to transform your thought processes and to guide your decisions, akin to ensuring your mind is awash with righteousness.
3. Live Obediently: As the song says, "do everything written in it." Faith without works is dead (James 2:26). Align your actions with the divine guidance found in Scripture to experience the fullness of God’s promises.
4. Rest in His Presence: Trust in God’s ever-presence by allowing fear and discouragement to dissipate. Embrace His assurance that He is with you, turning uncertainty into confidence.
We boldly proclaim: "Father, I choose to keep Your Word on my lips. I will meditate on it day and night. I will be strong and courageous because You are with me wherever I go. You have commanded and I will follow, trusting You for good success."
Let us pray: Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus, we commit to Your Word as our guiding light. We choose to speak, meditate, and live by it. Teach us to be courageous, stripping away fear, and empowering us with Your divine presence. Let us inherit and occupy the promises assigned to us for Your glory. Amen.
