The central theme of the song "Treasures in Heaven" echoes the profound instruction of Jesus Christ in Matthew 6:19-20: "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." Here, we are confronted with the eternal versus the temporal. Let us look at what the Word of God says.
The Book of Matthew records the teachings of Jesus, specifically within the setting known as the Sermon on the Mount. This particular discourse, delivered to His disciples and the multitude, serves as a manifesto of Kingdom living. The cultural context was one of immense disparity, where wealth was seen as a divine favor, and poverty was often perceived as a curse. Jesus addresses a people accustomed to valuing material wealth as a sign of God’s blessing and challenges their understanding by emphasizing eternal values.
When Jesus speaks of treasures, He contrasts the impermanent nature of earthly wealth with the lasting significance of heavenly investment. This counsel was both radical and liberating, revealing to us that true treasure is not constrained to monetary wealth but is found in the character and values aligned with God's kingdom.
To fully grasp Jesus' teaching, let us examine key terms in the original Greek.
Understanding these definitions allows us to see that Jesus calls us to intentionally place our values and investments in the eternal kingdom rather than ephemeral worldly wealth.
The lyrics of the song repeatedly emphasize the stark contrast between earthly and heavenly investments. Let us dissect this message through the lens of scripture.
The repeated exhortation, "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth," reminds us of the transient nature of material wealth. Ecclesiastes 5:10 echoes this truth: "Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless."
In teaching to store treasures in heaven, Jesus directs our focus to the incorruptible and eternal. Consider 1 Peter 1:4: "Into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you." Earthly treasures can deteriorate, decay, and disappear, representing temporal satisfaction lacking lasting value.
The heart's condition is further underscored in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." The positioning of our treasure becomes a reflection of our spiritual affiliation and allegiance. As believers, our covetousness for earthly gain should be supplanted by an earnest pursuit of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit (Romans 14:17).
This holistic shift in perspective equips us for spiritual warfare, recognizing that our greatest enrichment is found in Christ Himself, who is our ultimate treasure (Colossians 2:3).
Walking in obedience to this teaching involves intentional prioritization and practical steps.
1. Self-Examination: Begin by examining your heart and motives. Psalm 139:23-24 should echo in our hearts: "Search me, God, and know my heart... See if there is any offensive way in me." Identify where you have invested more in earthly treasures than in the kingdom.
2. Reprioritization: Reassess your life's priorities and realign them with the Kingdom of God. Colossians 3:2 instructs us to "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things." Choose to invest your time, talents, and resources in that which furthers His kingdom.
3. Generosity: Practise generosity as a tangible action of storing heavenly treasures. Proverbs 19:17 says, "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done."
4. Proclaim Eternal Values: Guard your association and cultural values by consistently proclaiming biblical truths. Speak aloud these values, declaring Philippians 4:8 over your life: "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure... think about such things."
Proclamation: "In faith, I declare that my treasure is in heaven. My heart is devoted to Christ and His eternal kingdom. I reject the fleeting and embrace the abiding."
Prayer: "Heavenly Father, grant me discernment to recognize the temporal nature of this world and the eternal treasure You offer. Align my pursuits with Your Kingdom and give me wisdom to store up treasures in heaven. Lord Jesus, be my peace and my portion forevermore. Amen."
The challenge set before us by the words of Jesus is clear. It beckons us into a life of purpose-driven living that seeks the eternal treasure found solely in alignment with God's will. Let us respond and walk accordingly, in faith and obedience.
