The central theme of this song, “Success in His Word,” is drawn directly from Joshua 1:8-9. These verses, rich in wisdom and instruction, guide us in how to walk in true prosperity and success according to God’s definition. "Keep this Book of the Instruction always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Through this divine command, we are exhorted to prioritize the Word of God, ensuring it holds a premier place in our hearts, minds, and actions. In these teachings, we gain insight into the way God defines prosperity and success—a way often contrary to worldly definitions.
The Book of Joshua records the leadership transition from Moses to Joshua, the son of Nun, as he takes on the daunting task of leading the Israelites into the Promised Land. This passage occurs at a critical juncture when God is commissioning Joshua. Here, Joshua is instructed to lead the people into a land filled with challenges and adversaries. These words serve not only as divine encouragement but as a blueprint for success.
God reassures Joshua that His presence will accompany him, but also sets conditions for success: continual meditation on the Law and adherence to it. This encouragement is pivotal as it sets the stage for what will be one of the most significant military campaigns in the history of Israel.
Our focus is on two Hebrew words critical to understanding the depth of the command given to Joshua: *hāgâ* (translated as "meditate") and *tsâlach* (translated as "prosperous").
Understanding these terms enhances our grasp of what God promised Joshua—and by extension, all believers—true success and prosperity that align with His purposes and Kingdom.
Keep the Book Always on Your Lips
The song emphasizes speaking the Word, which echoes the scriptural mandate to have the Book of the Law continually on our lips. This practice of audible meditation secures the Word of God in our hearts, transforming us from within. Romans 10:17 attests to this by stating, "Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God."
Meditate on It Day and Night
Joshua is instructed to meditate on the Word both “day and night.” Psalm 1 offers a parallel in verses 2-3, describing a righteous person who delights and meditates on the Law of the Lord day and night; such a person is likened to a tree planted by streams of water. Constant meditation produces stability and fruitfulness, aligning our thoughts with God’s truths.
Do Not Be Afraid; Be Courageous
The interjection of courage into this command is no coincidence. God knows the adversities that Joshua will face. The phrase “be strong and courageous” is not mere encouragement—it is a command. 2 Timothy 1:7 echoes this sentiment by reminding us that God has not given us a spirit of fear.
The Importance of Obedience
Obedience to God’s Word is tied indelibly to our success. James 1:22 warns us against merely listening to the Word and deceiving ourselves if we do not do what it says. Thus, biblical success stems from a heart of obedience and submission to God’s instructions.
1. Speak the Word Aloud:
2. Consistent Meditation:
3. Boldly Stand in Courage:
4. Obedient Action:
Proclamation: I declare that the Word of God is alive and active in my life. I commit to speaking it, meditating on it, and living it daily. In Christ, I have strength and courage, for the Lord my God is with me wherever I go. I will be prosperous and have good success as I walk in obedience to His Word.
Prayer: Almighty God, I thank You for Your Word and Your presence in my life. Grant me the grace to meditate on Your instructions and the courage to walk them out with boldness. Lead me in paths of righteousness and cause me to prosper in Your ways. May I glorify You in all that I do, trusting that You are with me wherever I go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
