The central theme of "Keep Asking, Keep Seeking" is rooted in the faithful assurance of God's generosity toward His children. We turn to Matthew 7:7-11, where Jesus says, "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened."
These powerful words emphasize the nature of our relationship with God: a Father who eagerly desires to give us good gifts. It's a call to persistence in prayer and trust in His goodness.
These verses fall within the Sermon on the Mount, a collection of teachings where Jesus outlined the principles of the Kingdom of Heaven. In this particular passage, Jesus addresses a crowd of diverse backgrounds, drawing lessons for the disciples and the multitudes who listened.
At this point, Jesus had already spoken about worry, trust, and judgment (Matthew 6:25–7:6). He transitioned into the themes of prayer and divine provision, reminding His followers of God’s willingness to respond to their needs. He uses relatable human scenarios, encouraging believers to trust in their Father’s perfect nature, especially when the earthly realm’s response is not as one desires.
### Ask (Greek: "Aiteó")
The Greek word "Aiteó" means "to ask, request, or petition." It implies a form of inquiry with expectation and desire. In context, "Aiteó" is not a passive request but an active engagement, suggesting a fervent appeal for God’s intervention.
### Seek (Greek: "Zetéo")
"Zetéo" conveys the idea of seeking with a mindset that intends to discover or obtain something. It’s similar to the earnestness of a treasure hunt. Thus, seeking isn’t a casual glance but a determined pursuit that encompasses searching both externally and internally, an incessant longing for God’s presence and purposes.
### Stanza 1-2: An Invitation to Reliance
“Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.”
Jesus invites us into a relational dynamic of prayer that aligns with Philippians 4:6, where Paul exhorts believers to "be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God."
This persistence is essential in spiritual warfare, where our encounters and challenges require divine aid. God does not promise this journey will be without difficulties, but He assures us of His readiness to respond.
### Stanza 3: Trust in God's Goodness
“Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake?”
Here, Jesus uses rhetorical questions to illustrate the absurdity of earthly parents denying their children’s needs with harmful substitutes. If flawed humans can give appropriately, how much more will God, our perfect Father, bless His children with what is good and beneficial? James 1:17 reminds us that "every good gift... is from above, coming down from the Father of lights."
### Persistent Action: Ask, Seek, Knock
Repeatedly, Jesus insists that persistence is key — "Keep on asking, keep on seeking, keep on knocking." Ephesians 6:18 encourages believers to "pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests," emphasizing continual engagement with God.
Each action implies varying depths of engagement: asking opens the dialogue, seeking denotes active pursuit, and knocking represents perseverance even in the face of obstacles.
### Divine Response: Assurance amidst Imperfection
“If you, though imperfect, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good things to those who ask Him.”
The comparison of human imperfection to divine perfection serves to build trust. Romans 8:32 furthers this trust, asking rhetorically, "He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?"
