The central theme of this song is the immense power of our words. Proverbs 12:18 (NIV) says, “The words of the reckless pierce like swords, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Let us look at what the Word of God says about the transformative capacity of our speech and the spiritual principles underlying the words we choose to speak.
Proverbs, attributed to Solomon, the son of David, king of Israel, is a collection of wise sayings. Solomon, known for his wisdom, received it as a divine gift from God. Within the book, these proverbs serve as instructions for living a life that pleases God and benefits others. During Solomon's reign, Israel was a prosperous nation, and wisdom was valued as a critical asset for leadership and personal conduct. In the context of these scriptures, Solomon contrasts reckless and wise speech, delivering a timeless principle: our words are either destructive like a sword or restorative as healing balm.
### Reckless and Wise
In Proverbs 12:18, the Hebrew word for "reckless" is "bāṭāh" (בָּטַח), which conveys a sense of being careless or thoughtless. It implies words spoken without consideration of their impact, likened to a piercing sword. In contrast, the word "wise" is "ḥāḵām" (חָכָם), which refers to someone skilled in understanding and discerning the consequences of their speech and actions. This wisdom is more than intellect; it is a spiritual insight granted by God.
### Heal
The word "heal" in Hebrew is "rapha'" (רָפָא), meaning to restore to health or make whole. It signifies the power speech has not only to mend what is broken but to also bring about a state of well-being. Thus, the scriptures encourage us to be deliberate in choosing words that serve to edify and heal rather than harm.
The lyrics illustrate a repeated call to exercise wisdom in our speech. Each stanza serves as a reminder and a reinforcement of scripture's teaching on the power of words.
### Stanza 1 and 2
"Some people speak words that cut like a sword…" is a direct reflection of Proverbs 12:18. Words have the potential to deeply wound our spirit, much like a physical sword wounds the body. Reckless words can be instruments of destruction, causing strife and emotional damage. On the contrary, wisdom in speech can bring healing—restoring relationships and building up individuals.
### Stanza 3 and 4
"Truthful words stand the test of time…" resonates with Proverbs 12:19, which contrasts the temporal nature of lies with the enduring quality of truth. Truthful speech creates a foundation that withstands trials, while lies lead to ruin and exposure.
### Stanza 5
"Speak truth, speak wisely—your words can heal a broken heart." This echoes the biblical principle found in Proverbs 15:4, “The soothing tongue is a tree of life.” Our speech should reflect truth and wisdom that aligns with God’s nature, offering solace and restoration to wounded hearts.
These stanzas emphasize spiritual warfare over our tongues. The inability to control our words can lead to spiritual bondage, while submitting our speech to the Holy Spirit allows us to partake in God’s ministry of reconciliation and salvation.
First, we must daily submit our tongues to God. James 3:6 tells us the tongue is a fire. Therefore, let us yield our speech to Christ, inviting Him to transform our words into instruments of peace and restoration.
Second, we must fill our hearts with God’s Word. Luke 6:45 declares that "the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." Out of the abundance of God’s Word, let us utter wisdom and truth reflective of His character.
Third, we must practice listening before speaking. Proverbs 18:13 says it is folly and shame to answer before listening. By seeking understanding, we ensure our words are appropriate and healing.
Fourth, we must make it a habit to affirm and build others up. Ephesians 4:29 encourages us to speak only what is helpful, for building others up according to their needs.
Let us proclaim together: “Lord, I submit my tongue to You. May my words be instruments of healing and truth. May my speech reflect Your wisdom and love, bringing life to all who hear.”
Let us pray: Almighty Father, we thank You for the gift of speech. Guard our words, O Lord, and let our tongues bring glory to Your name. Let us speak with the wisdom and truth that comes from Your Spirit, so that healing and restoration flow through us. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
