Our message is clear and unwavering: "Be strong and courageous." This refrain echoes from the depths of God’s Word, empowering believers across generations. The central foundation for this command comes from Joshua 1:9, which says, "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." As believers, let us explore what the Word of God teaches about strength in His presence and how we are to apply this ancient mandate in our daily walk.
The book of Joshua emerges after the death of Moses, God's servant, who led Israel out of Egyptian bondage and through the wilderness. Joshua, his appointed successor, faces the daunting task of leading a new generation of Israelites into the Promised Land. The command in Joshua 1:9 is not merely a suggestion but an imperative spoken by God to Joshua himself. Set before a backdrop of potential fear and overwhelming challenge, the Lord assured Joshua of His unwavering presence, coupling divine mandate with divine promise.
The Israelites stood on the edge of Canaan—a land flowing with milk and honey, yet teeming with fortified cities and fearsome warriors. They inherited a promise but also a battle. Joshua, representing Israel, embodies a call to divine dependence and resolute obedience, which is just as pertinent to us today.
### "Strong" (חָזַק, ḥāzaq)
In Hebrew, "strong" is translated as "ḥāzaq," which means "to become strong, prevail, or encourage." This word signifies not merely physical strength, but a fortitude that comes from a position of trust and reliance on God. It conveys the idea of seizing or holding onto God’s promises with tenacity.
### "Courageous" (אָמַץ, ʾāmats)
Similarly, the word "courageous" is "ʾāmats," meaning "to be stout, strong, alert." It carries the connotation of being resolute and steadfast, especially in the face of adversity. Here, strength is married to bravery—a bravery that is not innate but cultivated in God’s empowering presence.
These terms deepen our understanding that God’s command to Joshua—and to us—is an invitation to anchor ourselves in His promise and power, to face life’s uncertainties with unwavering confidence in God’s unchanging character.
### *Be strong and courageous*
The first stanza of the lyrics outlines Joshua 1:9 with precision. This command is a recurring theme, not just for Joshua, but throughout Scripture. Consider 2 Timothy 1:7, "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." Thus, the command to be strong and courageous finds its essence in the nature of God Himself who empowers us.
### *Obey all the law*
The song highlights the necessity of obedience, "Be careful to obey all the law; do not turn from it to the right or to the left." Deuteronomy 5:32 reiterates this principle, emphasizing a life aligned with God’s commandments. Romans 2:13 affirms, "For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified." Obedience acts as the channel through which divine strength and success flow.
### *God is with you wherever you go*
The presence of God is the soundtrack of Scripture, an assurance repeated in Hebrews 13:5, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." The lyrics encapsulate this truth—our courage does not derive from our circumstances but from the abiding presence of God. Israel’s history, marked by wandering and warfare, underscores this divine accompaniment, as seen in Exodus 33:14, "My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest."
### *No fear, no doubt*
The recurring reminder "No fear, no doubt" stands in opposition to the natural human inclination towards anxiety and uncertainty. Philippians 4:6-7 instructs us not to be anxious but to present our requests to God, thereby experiencing His peace which surpasses understanding. This peace, undergirded by trust in God’s promises, becomes our tool against the enemy's tactics of fear and discouragement.
First, we must embrace God's command. Regularly meditate upon Joshua 1:9. Speak it aloud over your life. Let the truth that God has commanded, empowered, and accompanied you become your daily declaration.
Second, we must align ourselves with God’s Word. Obedience is foundational. Study the Scriptures diligently. Psalm 1:2-3 reminds us that delighting in and meditating on God’s law ensures fruitfulness and stability.
Third, we must actively reject fear. When fear arises, confront it with God’s Word. 2 Corinthians 10:5 teaches us to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. Replace fears with promises of God, declaring His faithfulness throughout your day.
Fourth, we must practice the presence of God. Recognize and cultivate an awareness of God’s omnipresence. Intentionally invite Him into every situation and decision. In doing so, find confidence and peace regardless of external circumstances.
Let us boldly proclaim: "God has commanded me to be strong and courageous. I will not fear or be discouraged, for the Lord my God is with me wherever I go."
Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your enduring promise that You are with us. We choose to embrace Your command to be strong and courageous. Help us to walk in obedience and align our lives with Your Word. Enable us to reject fear and to stand firm in Your presence, knowing that You are with us every step of the way. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
