The central theme of this song echoes the profound truth of Romans 5:1, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." This foundational scripture reveals the essence of our Christian life. It speaks to justification, peace, and grace—all accessed through faith in Jesus Christ.
Romans, a letter penned by the Apostle Paul, was addressed to the believers in Rome. Paul writes with the intent of laying a solid doctrinal foundation. In Romans 5, he transitions from the principles he explained in the prior chapters about sin and justification to the products of righteousness—peace and hope. Rome was the center of a vast empire, filled with both Jewish and Gentile believers grappling with the implications of faith. The Roman believers needed clarity on how they were to live out the gospel in a mixture of persecution and pluralism. Paul writes with authority and deep understanding to equip them with theological truth necessary for spiritual maturity.
Two pivotal words in this passage are "justified" and "peace."
1. Justified *(Greek: δικαιόω, dikaioō)*
The term "justified" in Greek means "to be declared righteous." This legal term indicates a verdict rendered from a judge declaring one free of guilt. In the context of Romans, it is God, the Ultimate Judge, who declares believers righteous through faith. This declaration is not based on personal merit, but on Jesus’ sacrificial work on the cross.
2. Peace *(Greek: εἰρήνη, eirēnē)*
This Greek word for "peace" extends beyond mere cessation of conflict. It denotes wholeness, completeness, and contentment. For the believer, peace with God implies the removal of hostility and the establishment of a harmonious relationship—a covenantal shalom that reflects reconciled reality with God.
### "We have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ"
Through faith, the believer transitions from a state of enmity to one of peace. Ephesians 2:14 declares that Jesus "himself is our peace." This peace is not circumstantial but rooted in the reconciliation Christ accomplishes. Colossians 1:20 further supports this, stating, "...and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross."
### "No more separation—we’re right with Him now"
The reality of Romans 8:1 comes to fruition here: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." This speaks against the separation sin caused. Through Christ, we not only gain proximity to God but also intimacy. Hebrews 10:19-22 compels us to draw near with confidence because the veil of separation is eradicated.
### "Standing in grace"
Grace, charis in Greek, signifies unmerited favor, a gift given not earned. Romans 5:2 describes our access into this grace, a state wherein we are firmly positioned. This standing signifies stability and security, not subject to our fluctuating feelings or earthly circumstances. Our boast or exultation in the hope of sharing in God's glory (Romans 5:2) is a forward-looking confidence in the fulfillment of His promises.
### "Justified by faith—peace flows like a river"
Again, justification by faith leads to the far-reaching peace likened to a river, reminiscent of Isaiah 66:12, where peace is prophesied to flow like a river and glory like an overflowing stream. A river is continual and moves with purpose—a picture of the incessant abundance of peace God bestows upon His reconciled children.
1. Embrace Your Justification:
Recognize that your righteous standing before God is not dependent on your efforts but is a gift received through faith in Christ. Reflect on this truth daily, reminding yourself that God sees you as righteous because of Jesus.
2. Cultivate Peace:
Let the reality of being at peace with God saturate your soul. Confess any lingering guilt or shame and replace it with gratitude for the reconciliation Christ provides. Live from a state of inner harmony that spreads to your relationships with others, as urged in Romans 12:18.
3. Stand Firm in Grace:
Acknowledge that as you stand in grace, you are empowered to live a life reflecting that grace to others. Extend forgiveness, mercy, and love, knowing these are the marks of someone standing secure in God’s favor.
4. Anticipate Glory:
Keep an eternal perspective, rejoicing in the hope of the glory of God. Set your sights on heavenly realities, allowing them to invigorate your earthly journey with purpose and joy, as Colossians 3:1-2 encourages.
Proclamation:
Having been justified by faith, I declare that I have peace with God through Jesus Christ my Lord. I stand firm in the grace He provides, and I rejoice in the hope of His glory manifested in my life.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for justifying me through faith and establishing peace in my life through Jesus Christ. Help me to live confidently in this grace, extending it to others. May I continually fix my eyes on Your glory, allowing Your peace to guide me through every circumstance. In the name of Jesus, amen.
