Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. The essence of love is not a mystery shrouded in obscurity. It is revealed definitively in 1 John 4:7-8: "Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."
These verses are echoed throughout the song "The Essence of Love," drawing directly from the source of truth and highlighting the sacrificial love demonstrated by Jesus Christ.
The Apostle John, often referred to as the "Apostle of Love," penned his letters to the early church in order to affirm the characteristics of true followers of Christ and to combat false teachings. John is addressing believers in a time when the church faced internal and external challenges. The congregation needed clarity on the nature of divine love, a love distinct from the philosophical interpretations of the Greco-Roman world.
John's message is simple yet profound: authentic love is the evidence of divine birth and intimate knowledge of God. In his pastoral wisdom, John is both instructional and corrective, urging believers to reflect the nature of God, who is the source of perfect love.
One of the pivotal Greek words in this passage is "agape" (ἀγάπη), translated as "love." This love is unconditional, self-giving, and volitional, distinct from "phileo" (φιλία), which is affectionate love, or "eros" (ἔρως), romantic love. Agape is the love that God is, and subsequently, the love He imparts to His children.
The other key word is "ginōskō" (γινώσκω), which means "to know." This is not merely intellectual understanding but implies experiential knowledge—a relationship. Knowing God in this context is not abstract but deeply personal, evidenced by loving actions.
#### Stanza 1: Love Originates in God
The first stanza invites us to the understanding that love is not merely an emotion but a divine attribute. John declares that anyone who loves has been born of God—indicative of spiritual regeneration (John 3:3-5). Here, scripture cross-references the new birth expected of believers (2 Corinthians 5:17) and the intrinsic nature of God as love (1 Corinthians 13:4-7).
#### Stanza 2: The True Definition of Love
The song repeats 1 John 3:16, emphasizing the supreme act of love: "Jesus Christ laid down his life for us." This sacrificial love finds its ultimate demonstration at the cross. John challenges believers: "We ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." Jesus' command picks up in John 15:13, where He underscores the highest form of love, sacrificial love for others.
#### Stanza 3: Absence of Love as Absence of Knowledge
"Whoever does not love does not know God." This is a bold assertion. The absence of love equates to the absence of the knowledge of God. If we love, we reflect His image. Romans 5:5 teaches us that God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, testifying to God's indwelling presence.
#### Stanza 4: Repetition of Sacrificial Love
The song's repeated emphasis on Jesus laying down His life serves to deeply root believers in the reality that genuine love will cost us. It is not idle affection but decisive action—an action that mirrors Jesus' model as highlighted in Philippians 2:5-8.
First, we must embrace God's love personally. It is only through experiencing God's unconditional "agape" that we are empowered to extend this love to others. Romans 8:38-39 assures us of the unwavering nature of this love.
Second, we must let this love transform us. As we abide in Him (John 15:4), His love will naturally overflow. It demands character renewal, aligning our thoughts and actions with the nature of Christ (Colossians 3:14).
Third, love actively through service and sacrifice. True love manifests in actions. Seek opportunities to demonstrate Christ-like love that goes beyond convenience (James 2:15-17).
Fourth, exercise forgiveness. Just as God forgave us in Christ (Ephesians 4:32), love requires letting go of offenses. This clears barriers to genuine relationships and reflects God’s nature.
Proclamation:
Because I am born of God, I embody His love. God’s "agape" love compels me to love others as Christ loved me, manifesting His nature in my relationships. I declare that the love of God, shed abroad in my heart, overflows into transformative actions for His glory.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You that You are the source of all love. Help me to understand and embrace this divine love more deeply, transforming my heart and actions. Empower me by Your Holy Spirit to love sacrificially, as Christ loved. Let my life be a testimony of Your love to the world, reflecting Your glory in all I do. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
