The theme of this song is rooted in the profound simplicity of God's command—believe in Jesus Christ and love one another. This is drawn directly from 1 John 3:23, which states, "And this is His command: to believe in the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as He commanded us." Let us look at what the Word of God says.
This magnificent truth encapsulates the entirety of Christian life. The commandments are not burdensome; rather, they are liberating, for they invite us to live in union with Christ and to manifest His love through our actions.
The epistle of 1 John was penned by the Apostle John, the beloved disciple, who bore witness to the incarnation and teachings of Jesus Christ. This letter addresses believers who may face confusion or deception due to false teachings within their community. John reiterates fundamental Christian doctrines and ethics, emphasizing the love and truth embodied in Jesus Christ.
John’s authority stems from his firsthand experience with Jesus. He speaks as one who has touched, seen, and heard the Word of life (1 John 1:1). In the chaotic world of early Christianity, John brings clarity—true fellowship with God involves trusting in Jesus and expressing that trust through love for one another.
Let us examine two critical terms employed within the scripture:
### 1. Believe (Greek: "pisteuō")
The Greek word "pisteuō" (πιστεύω) translates as "believe" in English. It is not a mere intellectual assent but encompasses trust, reliance, and adherence. To believe in the name of Jesus is to commit wholeheartedly to Him, to rest everything upon His nature and His promises. This belief is relational and transformative.
### 2. Command (Greek: "entolē")
The word "entolē" (ἐντολή) means "command" or "instruction." It conveys more than a rule; it conveys a principle meant to be a guiding force in a believer’s life. This command is not arbitrary; it mirrors God's character and His desire for human flourishing through relationship with Him and with others.
### Believing in Jesus Christ
The command to believe in Jesus Christ parallels the New Testament's central tenet: Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). Our relationship with God hinges on recognizing and surrendering to the lordship of Jesus. This foundational belief empowers us to fulfill all other aspects of our faith.
### Loving One Another
This commandment is not new; it is as ancient as God's covenantal law. However, in Christ, it gains fresh significance. Jesus articulates this in John 13:34-35, where love becomes the hallmark of His disciples. Love is not optional but the very essence of Christian community. It is through love that the world comes to know who we serve (1 John 4:7-8).
### Living in Him
The repeated refrain from the lyrics, "Whoever keeps His commands lives in Him, and He in them," emphasizes the mutual indwelling—a concept echoed in John 15:4. As we obey His commands, we experience a dynamic relationship where Christ lives in us through His Spirit, transforming us from within.
### The Spirit’s Assurance
The assurance of Christ living in us is confirmed by the presence of the Holy Spirit. This aligns with 1 John 4:13, "This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit." The Spirit bears witness to our spirit, reinforcing our identity as God’s children (Romans 8:16). This immutable truth provides confidence and assurance as we navigate the Christian life.
To put this understanding into practice, consider these steps:
First, we must truly believe in Jesus.
This goes beyond acknowledging His existence; it involves a complete surrender to His authority in every area of life. Daily affirm your trust and reliance on Him through prayer, Scripture reading, and obedience.
Second, we must love one another sacrificially.
Look for ways to express genuine love in your community—be it through service, encouragement, or forgiveness. Remember, love is not measured by feeling but by action (1 John 3:18).
Third, we must remain in His commands.
John 15:10 reminds us, "If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love." Consistently align your actions with God’s commands. Dedicate time to discern His will through Scripture and prayer.
Fourth, we must rely on the Holy Spirit.
Acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s presence and promptings. Seek His guidance and empowerment daily, remembering that it is not by might nor by power, but by the Spirit (Zechariah 4:6).
Proclamation:
I proclaim that I trust wholly in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and I commit to loving others as He has commanded. I live in Him, and by His Spirit, He lives in me.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, and the empowering presence of Your Holy Spirit. Enable us to believe sincerely in You and to express our faith through selfless love. As we abide in Your commands, let Your Spirit assure us of Your abiding presence. Strengthen us to walk in obedience and love, reflecting Your nature in all we do. In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
