The song "Living in His Light" calls believers to a life of holiness and love, urging them to remain in Christ and live in accordance with His commandments, forsaking sin. Let us look at what the Word of God says in 1 John 3:5-6:
> "But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him."
This passage establishes the foundational truth for the believer: Jesus Christ came to earth to remove sin, calling us into a life of transformation and purity.
The Apostle John, known as "the disciple whom Jesus loved," authored the letter of 1 John to the early Christian community around A.D. 85-95. It was a period marked by various false teachings that threatened the church's doctrinal purity. Gnosticism was particularly rampant, claiming that spiritual enlightenment could be achieved apart from living a righteous life.
John writes with apostolic authority to affirm the truth of the Christian faith and to clarify the marks of true believers. His Epistle emphasizes fellowship with God and walking in His light. The audience, made up of early believers facing pressure from both secular society and deceptive teachings, needed a clear and authoritative word on what it means to live in true communion with Jesus Christ.
The term "sin" is pivotal to our understanding of the verse. In Greek, the word for sin is "ἁμαρτία" (hamartia), which implies "missing the mark" or a "failure to meet God's standard." It is not merely an act of wrongdoing but is deeply rooted in a state or condition of being.
The word "complete" in 1 John 2:5 is "τελειόω" (teleioō), which means “to bring to an end, to complete, to perfect." It denotes a process of bringing something to its intended purpose or full measure. Thus, God's love being "made complete" in us signifies the love achieving its full expression through obedience to His word.
Stanza 1:
The song opens with the central truth from 1 John 3:5: "He appeared to take away our sins, and in Him, there is no sin." This underscores the sinless nature of Christ, contrasting Him completely with fallen man. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus "was tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin." The purpose of His coming was directly tied to setting us free from the power and penalty of sin.
Stanza 2:
The assertion that no one who lives in Him keeps on sinning can seem daunting. However, as Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:16, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." Living in Christ involves a conscious, continuous reliance on the Holy Spirit, allowing our old nature to be transformed through the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2).
Stanzas 3 and 4:
"But whoever keeps His word, in them God’s love is truly made complete." Keeping His word requires intimate knowledge of Scripture and daily application. James 1:22 admonishes, "Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says." Loving obedience leads to the maturity of God’s love in our lives.
Stanza 5:
Hatred of a brother or sister is equated with living in darkness (1 John 2:9-10). We must understand that walking in the light is incompatible with harboring bitterness and animosity. Jesus commanded in John 13:34, "As I have loved you, so you must love one another." This profound command reflects the self-sacrificing love that characterizes genuine fellowship with Christ.
First, we must abide in Christ. Abiding is an active, continuous practice, as John 15:4 states, "Remain in me, as I also remain in you." Spend time daily in prayer and scripture, allowing His word to shape your thoughts and actions.
Second, we must repent and renounce sin. Recognize that sin is incompatible with the nature of God. 1 John 1:9 promises, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
Third, we must practice agape love towards others. Agape is love that seeks the highest good in others, regardless of response. Demonstrate kindness, patience, and understanding, even when it is not reciprocated, thereby choosing to live in the light.
Finally, we must be led by the Holy Spirit. Seek His guidance in every decision and allow Him to bear fruit in your life (Galatians 5:22-23). This aligns your life with the purpose for which you were created and molds you into the image of Christ.
Let us make this proclamation: "I proclaim that I live in Christ, and in Him, I have victory over sin. His word is alive in me, and through the power of the Holy Spirit, God’s love is perfected in my life. I walk in the light as He is in the light, loving my brothers and sisters as Christ loved His church."
Father, we thank You that in Christ, we are new creations, no longer bound by the sins of our past. We ask that You help us abide in Your truth, renouncing every sin that ensnares us. Fill us with Your Spirit and help us walk in Your light, showing Your love to those around us. In Jesus' name, Amen.
