The central theme of the song "The Advocate's Plea" points us to a profound truth found in 1 John 2:1-2:
*"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world."*
Let us look at what the Word of God says. These verses contain fundamental truths about sin, advocacy, and the scope of Christ’s atoning sacrifice.
The epistle of 1 John was penned by the Apostle John, one of the closest disciples of Jesus, often called the "disciple whom Jesus loved" (John 13:23). John wrote this letter to early Christian communities to safeguard them against false teachings and to encourage them in their faith. At this time, Gnosticism was creeping into the church, a heresy that distorted the nature of Christ and the purpose of His redemption.
In this environment, John emphasizes the dual role of Jesus as both our Advocate and Sacrifice. The term "Advocate" (Greek: Parakletos) suggests one who comes alongside to help or plead on behalf of another, much like a legal counselor. He comforts the believers by reassuring them of the continuing work of Christ on their behalf.
### Advocate
The Greek word used for "Advocate" is Parakletos. This term can mean "one who is called to one's side," especially in a legal sense, as an intercessor or helper. In the context of this scripture, it denotes Christ’s role as our defense lawyer, pleading our case before the Father. This legal metaphor illustrates the continuous intercession of Christ, emphasizing that we have an ongoing need for His grace.
### Atoning Sacrifice
The Greek term here is Hilaskomai, often translated as "propitiation" or "expiation." It refers to the appeasement of God's wrath against sin. In the old covenant, sacrifices were made to cover the sins of the people. However, Jesus is the perfect and final sacrifice, whose offering not only covers but fully and eternally atones for our sins.
The depth of these words cannot be overstated. The magnitude of Christ's advocacy and atonement is universal — "not only for our sins but also for the sins of the whole world."
### Stanza by Stanza
"My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not fall into sin."
John's affectionate address as "my dear children" is instructional and pastoral. It echoes the call to holiness—God's standard for His people (1 Peter 1:16). Sin is to be avoided, not minimized, but we are not left without hope when we fail.
"But if anyone does sin, we have an Advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One."
Here, John unveils the essence of Jesus' intercessory role. He does not advocate for us because of our own righteousness but because of His. Jesus stands as the Righteous One, advocating because His righteousness has been imputed to us (2 Corinthians 5:21).
"He himself is the sacrifice for our sins..."
The cross is central. Jesus' sacrificial death satisfies divine justice. The repetitiveness in the lyrics underscores the significance of the once-for-all nature of Christ's atoning work (Hebrews 7:27).
"We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands."
John introduces a measure of authenticity. True knowledge of Christ produces obedience. Faith without works is dead (James 2:26), and genuine faith compels us to follow His commands.
"Whoever claims 'I know him' but does not do what he commands is a liar..."
A declarative warning confirms that mere profession without corresponding practice is self-deceptive. If our lives do not reflect Christ’s teachings, we fail to manifest the truth of His work in us.
"If anyone obeys his word, God’s love is truly made complete in them."
Obedience is the evidence of divine love perfected within us. It is through our submission and alignment with God’s word that the fullness of His love is realized in our lives (John 14:21).
### First, Acknowledge Our Need for an Advocate
Recognize the gravity of sin and our constant need for Jesus as our Advocate. Daily acknowledge Him in prayer, remembering that it is His righteous advocacy that sustains us.
### Second, Commit to Walk in Obedience
Seek to align your life with His commands. Understanding that obedience is evidence of knowing Christ, strive to live according to the commands He has given, which find their fulfillment in love (Galatians 5:14).
### Third, Proclaim the All-Encompassing Atonement
Boldly confess that Jesus' sacrifice is sufficient for you and the entire world. This should compel us to share this truth and make disciples, understanding the breadth of His redemptive work.
### Fourth, Rest in His Completed Work
Rest assured in the sufficiency of the cross. When the enemy accuses, stand firm in faith, knowing that Christ's work is complete and His blood is enough.
### Proclamation
Lord Jesus, You are my Advocate and my Atonement. I declare that Your sacrifice is sufficient for my sins and for the sins of the whole world. I rest in Your righteousness and commit to walking in obedience to Your Word.
### Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank You for sending Your Son, Jesus Christ, as our Advocate and atoning Sacrifice. Empower us by Your Holy Spirit to walk in obedience, reflecting Your love to a world in need. Strengthen our faith to cling to Christ’s righteousness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
