The central theme of the song, "Walking in the Light," is profoundly rooted in the message of 1 John 1:5 and 1 John 1:7. Let us look at what the Word of God says:
"This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin." (1 John 1:5, 7 NASB).
The essence of these verses speaks of the divine nature of God as light and the transformative power of walking in that light. The passage reveals the connection between living in God's truth, experiencing true fellowship, and the cleansing power of Jesus's atoning sacrifice.
The Apostle John, the author of these epistles, wrote to a community of early Christians facing the challenges of false teachings and moral confusion. John, known as the beloved disciple, recorded these words in a time of great spiritual tension. The Gnostics of that era propagated misleading doctrines that distorted the truth of Christ's incarnation and the nature of sin, which led to division and confusion amongst believers.
John presents a clear dichotomy between light and darkness, reflecting God's purity against the deceitfulness of sin. As a spiritual father admonishing his spiritual children, John calls us to a life of integrity and truth, grounded in the reality of God's revealed nature. This message is not only timely but timeless, as the battle between light and darkness persists in every age.
To gain a fuller understanding of 1 John 1:5-7, we must delve into the original Greek word used for "light," which is "phōs" (φῶς). This word goes beyond mere physical light to encompass spiritual illumination and divine purity. "Phōs" signifies an unapproachable light, an expression of God's absolute holiness and truth.
The absence of "skotia" (σκοτία), the Greek word for "darkness," reinforces the complete separation between God's light and anything evil or deceptive. In this context, darkness suggests moral and spiritual blindness. The profound statement that "in Him there is no darkness at all" emphasizes God's unchanging nature as the ultimate standard of holiness and righteousness.
### Stanza 1: "This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all."
The apostle affirms the message's source: directly from Jesus Christ. It is not conjecture or philosophical speculation. It is a divine revelation, asserting that God's nature is consistent and without corruption. This truth aligns with Psalm 104:2, which states, "He wraps Himself in light as with a garment." God's holiness is inherent, and any deviation from light is incompatible with His nature.
### Stanza 2: "If we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another..."
To "walk" (Greek "peripateo" - περιπατέω) implies a continuous lifestyle, not an isolated act. It is a daily decision to align oneself with God's precepts. Walking in the light leads to genuine fellowship, reflecting the unity of believers built on truth. The light exposes and removes barriers, allowing sincere relationships to flourish, as seen in Ephesians 5:8, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light."
### Stanza 3: "...and the blood of Jesus, His Son, cleanses us from all sin."
The cleansing power of Jesus's blood is central to the gospel. The Greek word for "cleanses" is "katharizō" (καθαρίζω), implying continual cleansing. It assures believers that as we walk in the light, confessing and turning away from sin, Christ's atoning sacrifice remains effective. This mirrors Hebrews 9:14, which assures that the blood of Christ purifies our consciences for the sake of serving God.
First, we must embrace the truth of God's nature. Acknowledge that God is the ultimate source of light and that His ways are perfect. Align your heart with His standards through regular study of the Scriptures.
Second, we must commit to walking in continual communion with God. Reject the works of darkness, which are incompatible with your new nature in Christ. Ephesians 5:11 commands us to have "no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them."
Third, we must cultivate genuine fellowship with fellow believers. Walking in the light is not a solitary journey. Seek out a community that prioritizes truth and encourages accountability, helping each other grow in spiritual maturity.
Fourth, we must trust in the ongoing cleansing work of Jesus. Confess your sins openly and confidently to God, knowing that His blood is efficacious. Recall 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
Proclamation: "I walk in the light as He is in the light. I have fellowship with the body of Christ and through the blood of Jesus, I am cleansed from all sin. No darkness can reside within me, for God's light prevails."
Prayer: Father, I thank You that You are light and in You, there is no darkness at all. Help me to walk continually in the light of Your presence. Strengthen my fellowship with my brothers and sisters in Christ. I declare that the blood of Jesus purifies me, setting me free from sin and enabling me to live a life pleasing to You. Amen.
