"Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up." This powerful exhortation emerges from James 4:7-10. It is a divine formula for victory, deeply ingrained in the Word of God. This passage, and the song it inspires, unveils a path to spiritual authority and elevation through submission and humility. Let us examine what the Word of God says and consider how we might apply these truths to our lives.
The Epistle of James is a compelling piece of New Testament literature. James, often understood as the brother of Jesus, is writing to the Jewish believers scattered abroad, as “twelve tribes that are dispersed” (James 1:1). These fledgling Christians were navigating trials, temptations, and persecutions. James’s aim was to provide practical wisdom and instruction, acting like the "Proverbs" of the New Testament, addressing how believers should live out their faith amidst various adversities.
Chapter 4 speaks explicitly about conflicts and quarrels among them, identifying their root in human desires and worldly entanglements. James calls them to draw near to God, showing them the necessity of genuine repentance, humility, and submission to God as the pathway to true peace and victory.
For deeper understanding, let us examine two Greek words in this passage: "Submit" and "Resist".
1. Submit (Hypotassō): The Greek word "hypotassō" is often used in a military context, meaning to arrange "under" or to subordinate oneself. It is an intentional, voluntary act of placing oneself under God's authority. This submission is the first and vital step in maintaining spiritual order.
2. Resist (Anthistēmi): The Greek word "anthistēmi" means to stand against or oppose. In context, this means to take a firm, deliberate stand against the devil. It implies an active resistance to his schemes, not passivity.
By understanding the original language, we recognize the active roles we play in submission and resistance. We are not called to be passive pawns but to take deliberate action in our spiritual walk.
The structure of the song closely follows the rhythm of the scripture, emphasizing the necessity of submission, resistance, and humility:
"Submit yourselves then to God." Submitting to God is the initial act of aligning ourselves with His divine will and authority. This same submission is echoed throughout Scripture, in the call to "seek first His kingdom and His righteousness" (Matthew 6:33). It is an acknowledgment of God's sovereignty over our lives, paving the way for every subsequent spiritual victory.
"Resist the devil and he will run from you." This promise is an assurance of the devil's cowardice in the face of spiritual authority. When we resist through faith, secured in the power of Christ, the evil one must flee. Ephesians 6:11-12 instructs us to "put on the full armor of God," providing the tools necessary to stand firm against the devil's schemes. This resistance is not in our strength, but in God's.
"Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up." Humility is not self-deprecation; it is a recognition of our need for God. The biblical precedent is clear: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (1 Peter 5:5). The promise that follows humility is elevation. God alone has the authority to lift us high, restoring us and setting us on firm ground.
Applying this teaching requires deliberate steps:
1. Submission to God's Authority: Begin your day by aligning yourself under God's will through reading Scripture and prayer. Confess any areas of self-reliance and invite God to reign supremely in your life.
2. Active Resistance to the Devil: Acknowledge that spiritual warfare is real. Equip yourself daily with the armor of God (Ephesians 6:13-18). Maintain vigilance in prayer, fasting, and memorizing scripture to counter the enemy's deception.
3. Practice Humility: Recognize areas where pride may be hindering your relationship with God. Cultivate a spirit of gratitude and servitude, emulating Christ's humility as depicted in Philippians 2:5-8.
4. Trust in God’s Promise to Elevate You: As you humble yourself before God, trust that in His perfect timing, He will lift you up. Be patient and steadfast, knowing that God's plan is perfect and His timing impeccable.
Proclamation:
In the name of Jesus, I submit myself to Almighty God. I resist the devil by the authority of the Word, and he must flee. I humble myself before my Lord, confident that He will lift me up in His grace and power.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the truth of Your Word. I submit my life to Your divine authority and resist the devil's schemes. Empower me by Your Holy Spirit to walk in humility and obedience. Lift me according to Your will for my life. I trust in Your timing and sovereignty. In Jesus' name, Amen.
