1. The Foundation (Introduction)

“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

— Matthew 4:19

“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… And behold, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

— Matthew 28:19–20

Here we have two great commissions from the same Lord. One is at the beginning of His earthly ministry, the other at the close. One is addressed to simple fishermen by the Sea of Galilee; the other to commissioned apostles on a mountain in Galilee. Yet the message is the same: Follow Me… and I will make you fishers of men.

The central theme of these lyrics is the call of Jesus to follow Him and to be engaged in His mission for souls. This is not an optional extra for a few gifted evangelists. This is the normal Christian life. He calls. We follow. He makes. We go. He is with us.

Before we examine our emotions, our experiences, or our traditions, we must ask: What does the Word of God say?

We see two key truths:

1. The call: “Come, follow Me… Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”

2. The commission: “Go and make disciples of all nations… I am with you always.”

The song simply sings back to Jesus what He has already said in Scripture. Our task is to understand what this means in its original setting, and then how to apply it in our day.

2. The Historical & Biblical Context

### The Context of Matthew 4:19

Matthew 4 records the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry in Galilee. John the Baptist has prepared the way. Jesus has been baptized and has overcome Satan’s temptations in the wilderness. Now the King steps into public view.

> “From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.’”

Immediately following this proclamation of the kingdom, we read:
