“Seek His Kingdom First” brings us back to one of the central commands of Jesus concerning how we are to live in this present age:
> “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”
> — *Matthew 6:33 (NKJV)*
Linked to this are two other foundational scriptures:
> “Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment.’”
> — *Matthew 22:37–38 (NKJV)*
> “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.”
> — *James 4:8 (NKJV)*
These three passages taken together describe:
1. The priority of the Christian life – seek the Kingdom first.
2. The motive and inner attitude – love God with all that you are.
3. The spiritual dynamic – as you draw near, God responds and draws near to you.
They address three great questions:
This song is, in essence, a sung sermon on these truths. It calls us away from anxiety, idolatry, and self-dependence, and into a life ordered around the Kingdom, saturated with love for God, and grounded in confident trust that He will provide.
So we begin, as always: What does the Word of God say?
### Matthew 6:33 – In the Sermon on the Mount
Matthew 6:33 is found in the heart of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Jesus is describing the lifestyle of those who belong to His Kingdom.
In Matthew 6:19–34, Jesus addresses a very practical issue: material concerns.
The immediate context of 6:33 is Jesus saying:
> “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’
> For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things.”
