“So this is how you should pray.”
These are not the words of a theologian, a rabbi, or a prophet. They are the words of the Son of God Himself. The central theme of this song is not prayer in general, but Jesus’ own pattern for prayer—what we commonly call *the Lord’s Prayer*.
Let us look at what the Word of God says:
> “This, then, is how you should pray:
> ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
> your kingdom come,
> your will be done,
> on earth as it is in heaven.
> Give us today our daily bread.
> And forgive us our debts,
> as we also have forgiven our debtors.
> And lead us not into temptation,
> but deliver us from the evil one.’”
> — Matthew 6:9–13 (NIV)
The song “Pray Like a Child” seeks to echo these words of Jesus in simple, childlike language, yet it expresses profound spiritual realities:
This is not just a text to recite. It is a pattern to shape the heart, the mind, and the entire Christian life. The lyrics emphasize what Jesus Himself emphasized: *how* we should pray, *whom* we are praying to, and *what* must govern our requests.
The words of Matthew 6:9–13 are part of what we call the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7). Jesus is teaching His disciples how life in the kingdom of heaven is to be lived on earth.
The immediate context is critical:
> “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men… But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen
