“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.”
— *Matthew 7:21*
We are dealing here with some of the most searching, fearful, and decisive words that ever came from the lips of Jesus. They confront us with a fact many Christians do not like to face: it is possible to be religious, active in ministry, using the name of Jesus, and yet be shut out of the kingdom of heaven.
Jesus does not speak about unbelievers, atheists, or people hostile to God. He speaks of people who address Him as “Lord, Lord,” who operate in spiritual gifts, who have a record of powerful ministry. Yet His verdict is: “I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!”
The central theme of the lyrics and the Scripture is very clear:
The question is not: “Do I call Him Lord?”
The question is: “Do I *do* His will?”
Let us look at what the Word of God says, and allow the Holy Spirit to expose any deception, to deliver us from empty profession, and to establish us in obedience.

These words stand at the climax of the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), which is the constitution of the kingdom of God. Jesus is not giving inspirational thoughts; He is laying down the laws, standards, and conditions of His kingdom.
### Who is speaking?
Jesus, the Messiah, the Son of God, is speaking with divine authority. At the end of this sermon we read:
> “When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers
