In the first century, the church was often subjected to teachings that distorted the gospel and led believers astray. Jude addresses these issues by urging the faithful to contend earnestly for the faith and remain vigilant against such deceptions.
Jude's words come as a compassionate exhortation to believers to persevere in truth and love. The situation underscores the ongoing battle between the truth of God and the lies of the enemy, a conflict that is at the heart of spiritual warfare.
### "Build" (Greek: οἰκοδομέω - oikodomeō)
The word "build" in Greek, translated as "oikodomeō," carries the connotation of constructing or edifying. It implies a continuous process of strengthening or establishing. Jude's use of this word suggests that our faith requires active participation and effort, much like the work of constructing a building over time, implying that spiritual growth is intentional and progressive.
### "Keep" (Greek: τηρέω - tēreō)
The Greek word for "keep" is "tēreō," which means to guard, to attend to carefully, or to hold firmly. This word stresses the importance of maintaining a vigilant guard over our spiritual condition. It reflects the intentionality and diligence required to preserve oneself in God’s love amidst the storms of life.
The lyrics echo the imperatives found in Jude 1:20-23:
### First, we must build ourselves through Scripture.
To "build up" our faith, immerse yourself in the Word of God daily. Ephesians 6:17 speaks of the "sword of the Spirit," which is the word of God. Let it penetrate your heart and shape your actions.
### Second, we must pray under the Holy Spirit's influence.
Pray consistently and allow the Spirit to guide your petitions. Romans 8:26 assures us that the Spirit helps in our weaknesses by interceding for us.
### Third, we must vigilantly preserve our position in God's love.
Guard your heart and mind in Christ. Live obediently according to His commands, maintaining spiritual disciplines that position you within His love (Philippians 4:7).
### Fourth, we must show active compassion.
Reach out in grace to those who doubt; be merciful and patient. Actively engage in seeking and saving the lost, rescuing them from the grip of sin while maintaining personal integrity (Matthew 28:19-20).
