The central theme of the song "Waiting in God's Love" captures the essence of Jude 1:20-21: "But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life." This scripture exhorts believers to actively engage in nurturing their faith, dwelling in the love of God, and awaiting the final manifestation of Jesus’ mercy at our journey’s culmination.
The epistle of Jude is addressed to an unspecified group of believers. Jude, the half-brother of Jesus and a servant of Christ, wrote during a time when the early church was facing challenges from false teachers who distorted the grace of God. His letter, though brief, is a powerful admonition to contend for the faith and remain steadfast amidst deception. Jude’s warnings and instructions are vital for maintaining the purity and integrity of the Christian community. As we immerse ourselves in these verses, we align with Jude’s intent to bolster robust spiritual resilience.
Let us examine the word "build" from Jude 1:20. The Greek word used here is *epoikodomeō*, meaning "to build upon" or "to build up." It implies not just the construction of something new but the addition of strength and stability to an existing foundation. Our "most holy faith" is the cornerstone upon which we are called to develop an edifice conducive to spiritual growth and maturity.
Turning to "faith," the Greek term is *pistis*, denoting trust and belief. It is more than mere cognitive assent; it represents a living trust that impels action and sustains our relationship with God. This depth of understanding challenges us to continually expand our faith through the Spirit's empowerment.
The first stanza of the song reiterates the command to build ourselves up in faith and to pray in the Holy Spirit. This is not merely a suggestion but a foundational aspect of spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:18 beckons us to pray "on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests." Our prayers, infused by the Spirit, become potent weapons against spiritual adversities.
As the lyrics unfold, the charge to "keep yourselves in God’s love" becomes evident. Romans 8:38-39 assures us that nothing can separate us from God’s love. Yet, Jude calls us to a proactive stance—persistently positioning ourselves within the sphere of God’s steadfast love. This is active engagement, not passive reliance.
The message of mercy is central in the third stanza. "Be merciful to those who doubt" finds its echo in Romans 14:1, where we are instructed to accept those whose faith is weak, without passing judgment. Mercy becomes a bridge over which we extend love to the wavering, the faltering, and the doubting.
The images drawn upon—snatching others from the fire, showing mercy mixed with fear—depict the urgency and gravity of our mission. We are reminded of James 5:20 where turning a sinner from the error of his way will "save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins."
First, we must build ourselves up in our faith. This involves daily engagement with scripture, constant prayer, and active fellowship with other believers. Being well-versed and grounded in God’s Word fortifies our spiritual structure.
Second, we must pray in the Holy Spirit. This requires us to be sensitive to the Spirit's leading, allowing Him to guide our supplications. Praying in the Spirit—whether in our native language or in tongues—aligns our heart with God’s will.
Third, we must keep ourselves in God’s love. By embracing attitudes of gratitude, obedience, and worship, we maintain our communion with Christ. Regular self-examination and confession keep us intimate with Him.
Fourth, we must practice mercy tempered with wisdom. Engage with those who doubt without condescension. Approach those in spiritual peril with discernment, knowing that God desires none to perish.
Proclamation:
In the authority of Christ, I proclaim that I am being built up in my most holy faith. I am committed to praying in the Holy Spirit and keeping myself in the boundless love of God. I am waiting with expectation for the mercy of Jesus Christ to bring me into eternal life.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unfailing love and the gift of faith. Empower me by Your Spirit to build a life that honors You. Help me to be steadfast in love, vigilant in mercy, and bold in prayer. Grant me the courage to reach out to those in need, and the strength to remain faithful as I await Your coming. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
