As believers, the powerful truth we must understand is encapsulated in the words, "Perfect love drives out fear." In 1 John 4:17-19, the Apostle John writes, "This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world, we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because he first loved us." Let us look at what the Word of God says about this profound scripture and how it provides the antidote to fear.
The Apostle John, one of Jesus' closest disciples, penned these words in a letter addressed to early Christian communities. John’s purpose was to clarify foundational truths of the faith, expounding on the nature of God as love, and instructing believers on how to discern the spirit of truth from error. The fear he addresses is rooted in the anticipation of judgment—an understanding shaped by knowing the Holy character of God and the sinfulness of humanity. This passage reassures us of God’s perfect love as manifested through Jesus Christ, inviting believers to live in that love without fear of condemnation.
Two key terms in this scripture are "fear" and "perfect." The Greek word for "fear" is "φόβος" (*phobos*), which goes beyond simple apprehension to encompass a dread of punishment or harm. This indicates a state of anxiety caused by anticipated negative outcomes.
The term "perfect" translates from the Greek "τελειόω" (*teleioo*), which means to bring to an end or to be fully accomplished, signifying completeness with nothing left wanting. Perfect love, therefore, is a mature, complete love that leaves no room for fear. Understanding these terms illuminates the profound nature of divine love—it is complete, casting out the root of fear which is punishment.
### Stanza 1: Love Made Complete
"This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world, we are like Jesus."
Here, John declares that love reaches its full maturity in us, making us confident before God, even on the day of judgment. The confidence mentioned is not arrogance but a deep security in God’s love, transforming us to be like Jesus in the world, reflecting His love and character. This echoes Romans 8:1, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” By aligning our lives to Christ’s image, we demonstrate His love and genuine faith.
### Stanza 2-5: Perfect Love Drives Out Fear
This repeated refrain, “There is no fear in love. Perfect love drives out fear,” stresses the sufficiency and transforming power of God’s love. Fear is rooted in expectations of punishment—yet Romans 5:8 states, "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." This assurance in Christ dismisses the penalty of sin and fear. God’s perfect love replaces dread with peace and security.
### Stanza 6: Response to Love
“We love because He first loved us.” Our capacity to love in return is a direct response to experiencing God’s initiating love. 1 John 4:10 confirms this, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” God’s action is the catalyst that compels us to reflect His love genuinely, transcending fear.
To truly walk in this truth, we must take practical steps guided by the Word of God:
* Abide in God’s Love: Saturate yourself in the Word by reading scriptures that reaffirm God’s love. Meditate on Romans 8:38-39, which declares that nothing can separate us from God’s love. Prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the depths of His love—a revelation key to dispelling fear.
* Renew Your Mind: Romans 12:2 instructs, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Replace fear-based thinking with God’s promises through memorization and proclamation of His Word.
* Live like Jesus: Emulate the love and compassion of Jesus by serving others. 1 John 3:18 emphasizes, "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth." This active love demonstrates God’s completeness in us.
* Identify and Rebuke Fear: Recognize fear as a spirit not from God (2 Timothy 1:7), and rebuke it in the name of Jesus. Replace it with faith-filled declarations of God’s truth over your life.
Proclamation:
In the authority of Jesus' name, I proclaim that God’s perfect love is alive in me. I declare that His love casts out all fear, for I am complete in Christ. As Jesus is, so am I in this world, confident on the day of judgment. His love empowers me to live fearlessly. I am loved because He first loved me.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I thank You for Your perfect love that has been poured out into my heart through the Holy Spirit. I ask You, Lord, to mature Your love in me every day. Let Your love cast out every root of fear, and transform me to reflect Your Son, Jesus, in this world. In His precious name, Amen.
