In our study today, we turn to the powerful revelation found in the song "Faith's Assurance," rooted deeply in Hebrews 11:6, Hebrews 11:3, and Hebrews 11:1. Let us look at what the Word of God says:
This foundation of faith is not merely a religious sentiment but a fundamental principle of living in alignment with God's reality.
Hebrews, traditionally attributed to Paul or an early Christian leader inspired by the Holy Spirit, was written to Jewish Christians who were facing persecution and were tempted to abandon their faith in Christ. The message of Hebrews is a call to perseverance grounded in the supremacy of Jesus Christ and the certainty of faith.
The eleventh chapter, known as the "Hall of Faith," highlights the testimonies of men and women who lived by faith. The author's purpose is to remind the readers that faith is central to their relationship with God, setting the stage for God's commendation and interaction with His creation.
Let us examine two pivotal terms in our passage:
1. "Faith" (Πίστις, *pistis*): In the original Greek, this word signifies a firm persuasion or conviction based upon hearing. "Pistis" implies a trust that rests on the belief of God's promises and faithfulness.
2. "Assurance" (ὑπόστασις, *hypostasis*): This term means a substantial nature or reality, a firm trust. It denotes not just a hope that is wishful, but a conviction of the reality not yet seen but guaranteed by God.
Understanding these terms deepens our grasp of the lyrics: Faith is not only a mental assent but a profound conviction that transforms our way of perceiving the visible and invisible.
Let us break down the song’s themes:
### a. Faith Complements Divine Pleasure (Hebrews 11:6)
It is essential to recognize that without faith, it is not merely difficult but impossible to please God. The necessity of faith affirms God's existence and His benevolent nature to reward those who seek Him with diligence. It resonates with the promise of Jeremiah 29:13, "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
### b. The Universe’s Formation by Faith (Hebrews 11:3)
The lyrics rest on the truth that God, by an act of sovereign decree, formed the universe. "By faith, we understand" implies that such understanding is divinely given, not achieved by human reasoning. This speaks to the majesty of God as the Creator, who brings forth visible reality from the invisible; much like He made the world appear from nothingness, He brings His promises into reality in our lives.
### c. Confidence and Assurance (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith is defined as confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This confidence stems from the character of God, who is unchanging and whose word is unfailing. It is the same faith demonstrated by the ancients, like Abraham, who "believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness" (Romans 4:3).
### d. God's Reward for Seekers
The repeated call to "come to Him believing He is real and He is good" underpins the necessity of faith as an active pursuit of God, who is a rewarder of faith. As it connects with Psalm 34:8, “Taste and see that the LORD is good," it emphasizes the tangible experiences of God's goodness in the life of a believer.
Faith demands action. Let us consider practical steps:
1. Believe in His Existence and Goodness: Affirm daily that God is real and good. Proclaim it, speak it over your life and situations.
2. Seek God Diligently in His Word and Prayer: Engage with Scripture and prayer, the means through which the Holy Spirit deepens our understanding of God's purposes and character.
3. Trust God in the Invisible: Act in obedience even when outcomes are not visible. Remember that the seen was made from the unseen. Our obedience aligns us with His sovereign will.
4. Proclaim and Expect God’s Rewards: Speak God's promises over your life. Expect His rewards as you earnestly seek Him, according to His nature and promise.
Let us make this proclamation together:
"I proclaim by faith that I believe in the reality and goodness of God. My confidence is in God’s promises, assured by His steadfast character. I commit to seeking Him diligently, knowing He rewards those who earnestly pursue Him. By faith, I understand that the visible was birthed from the invisible, and likewise, my hopes and God’s promises will manifest in His perfect timing."
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of faith. We ask for a greater measure of faith that pleases You, that we might walk in trust, obedience, and expectation of Your rewards. Help us to see Your hand in the invisible and to cling to Your promises. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray, Amen.
