"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" (1 John 3:1, NIV). In the midst of this beautiful declaration lies the central theme of the song "Children of His Love." The Apostle John penned these words under divine inspiration to elucidate a profound truth: through the unfathomable love of God, we have become His children in a literal, spiritual, and eternal sense.
The epistle of 1 John was written by the Apostle John, one of the original twelve disciples of Jesus, likely between A.D. 85-95. John writes from an experiential understanding rooted in his time with Christ, addressing a community besieged by false teachings. The occasion of his writing was to affirm the identity of believers and the assurance they hold in the truth of Christ.
The early church faced a great dichotomy between the truth revealed by Jesus and the deceptive philosophies arising within their midst, such as Gnosticism. John firmly reminds believers of their status and identity: beloved children of God. To these followers, living among competing ideologies, John emphasizes a reality rooted in God's love and the hope of Christ's return.
The English term "lavished" translates the Greek word "ἐδίδωκεν" (edōken), a derivative of "δίδωμι" (didōmi), meaning "to give" or "to bestow." The nuance here is one of generosity and magnitude beyond simple giving, underscoring an extravagant impartation of divine love. This is not mere recognition but an overwhelming expression of affection and favor from God the Father.
Another key term is "children" from the Greek word "τέκνα" (tekna), signifying not just offspring but a familial bond indicating legitimate authority, inheritance, and identity. Unlike mere creation, this term connotes an intimate relationship that transforms our legal and existential standing before God.
The song's lyrics echo the biblical affirmations from 1 John 3:1-2, celebrating the identity of believers as children of God. This is a standing granted not through human effort, but by the infinite love of God.
First, we must embrace our identity as children of God. This means actively rejecting the false narratives the world imposes, knowing our legitimacy and worth come from the Father's love. Romans 8:16 affirms, "The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."
Second, we must live with expectation of Christ's return. This hope purifies (1 John 3:3) and motivates us towards holiness and sanctity. We ought to set our minds on things above, not earthly things (Colossians 3:2).
Third, we must manifest the love of God in our daily interactions. As recipients of divine love, we are called to extend that same love to others, fulfilling the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2).
Fourth, we must engage in spiritual warfare, understanding that as children of God, we are participants in a spiritual battle. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of evil. We must, therefore, employ the full armor of God.
Proclamation: "I am a child of God, loved with an everlasting love. I stand in the identity given to me by my Heavenly Father. I await with hope the return of my Lord, Jesus Christ, knowing I will be transformed into His likeness. Despite a world that does not recognize my identity, I live in assurance and truth. Amen."
Prayer: "Father, we thank You for the abundant love You have lavished upon us, calling us Your children. Strengthen our hearts to embrace this identity fully. Fill us with the hope of Christ’s return and the transformation it brings. Empower us to live in Your love daily, and grant us victory in spiritual warfare. In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen."
